Exciting young ruckman Callum Jamieson is relishing his opportunity in the Eagles' engine room after debuting in round two against North Melbourne.

Following a heartbreaking knee injury to two-time All Australian Nic Naitanui, the youngster was required to step up after three seasons on West Coast's list and has shown some signs early, particularly in his second match against Brisbane.

And after competing hard last weekend against reigning premiers Melbourne's imposing ruck duo, Jamieson said he learnt plenty against one of the competition's best in Max Gawn and young gun Luke Jackson.

"It's been a whirlwind. I'm loving getting an opportunity playing in the big league," Jamieson said.

"'Simmo's' (coach Adam Simpson) been real big for my development, he's got a connection across the whole list, I think that's a big focus of his. He looks out for me and all of the other boys.

"But I'm trying to take leaves out of multiple different ruckmen's books. I think you're always looking at different ruckmen and what you can do to match it with them.

"Obviously we've got Nic (Naitanui) here, giving a lot of knowledge to us, so I try and take as much as I can out of Nic.

"Last week it was a good opportunity against arguably the best in the business, Max Gawn and Luke Jackson.

"Max is real crafty below his knees, so it was good learning to watch him and see how he does it.

"You always back yourself in, you're always trying to get the ball to your teammates, so I backed myself in, got over a couple and he won his fair share too."

Following injuries to key personnel including captain Luke Shuey (hamstring), Elliot Yeo (Health and Safety Protocols) and Andrew Gaff (quad), the Eagles have called on their youngsters in a number of games across the season.

With 25 games' experience between them, Connor West and Bailey Williams took strides in developing their midfield craft on the weekend, while Harry Edwards stood tall alongside star backmen Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass.

"It sucks having so many injuries to senior players, but it does give opportunities to young fellas," Jamieson said.

"We saw 'Westy' have a ripper game on the weekend, young fellas like Bailey and myself coming in, we need to take those opportunities and lead the group.

"Brady Hough's had a few games. Harry Edwards, there's a good bunch of young boys coming through.

"There's been a few injuries, which sucks, but with injury comes opportunity. There's a few players stepping up, as we saw on the weekend."

Ahead of his fourth game, Jamieson is preparing to take on an in-form Braydon Preuss at Giants Stadium, with the Eagles hoping to notch their second win on the board this year.

"Nic's been really helpful with all us young rucks, obviously he's not on the track at the moment, he's in all the meetings, he's one of the best in the business and he gives a lot of help to us young boys," Jamieson said.

"Just his knowledge around the game, he's come up against a lot of these ruckmen so he knows a lot of the ruckmen inside and out.

"Big Preuss this week, we'll see how we go, we're going over to get a win and hopefully can come back with the four points.

"We're preparing for GWS at their best, and their best is really good, so we prepare like any other week. We looked at our game last week and we thought our second and third quarter was strong.

"Obviously scoring needs to improve but we thought our contest work and method around the ball was much bigger than it has been lately.

"So, some good learnings came out of that game. I'm enjoying it."
