The midfield, considered a weakness by those outside the club a couple of years ago, is fast developing into an elite running corps, with players in that key line doing so much to propel West Coast to nine wins from the first 12 matches.

And players competing for places are applying pressure via the WAFL, with disciplined on-baller Mark Hutchings leading the way for East Perth in an important win over East Fremantle at the weekend.

Hutchings, who had an interrupted start to the season because of groin issues, had 31 possessions and six tackles in an outstanding display.

In addition, wingman Kane Lucas continues to rack up big numbers at the second tier with another 30-plus possession performance. He has been ultra-consistent and used the ball particularly well against the Sharks.

Murray Newman was lively up forward with 14 possessions and seven marks, capping off his work with three goals and he continues to set the benchmark for his defensive application, ensuring the ball stays within the Royals’ forward half.

In defence, Tom Barrass continues to develop, with an 11 possession, five mark effort on the last line.

Former baseballer Corey Adamson, who played State junior football before pursuing his other sporting interest in the States, made his senior debut and was impressive first-up, with 16 possessions and a long range goal. He also pumped the ball inside the attacking 50 metre arc seven times.

Damien Cavka, a draftee to the club last November, also played his first senior game for the Royals, and picked up 11 possessions. He will be looking to build on that in coming weeks, although East Perth has a bye in the WAFL this week.

Tall forward Fraser McInnes had 16 possessions and kicked two goals, while also enjoying some time in the ruck where he had 15 hit outs.

Brant Colledge (16 disposals), Rowen Powell (10 possessions) and Paddy Brophy (15 touches and four marks) rounded out the performances of West Coast players in what was a solid team performance.

Dylan Main played in the reserves and is building again, with 21 touches and four marks after a disjointed first half of the season. Continuity of games has been an issue for Main, who has had his progress interrupted a couple of times by a back injury.
