Namesake claims 2019 Stevie Simpson Cup

Stevie Simpson Cup 2019 The boys head down to the beach with their canine companions for the annual Stevie Simpson Cup!

The 2019 Stevie Simpson Cup has been run and won, with the event’s namesake claiming the title for the first time.

West Coast Eagles senior coach Adam Simpson punched the air with delight as his dog, Stevie, crossed the finish line ahead of reigning champion Phillip Kennedy and 2018 runner-up Ada Kennedy at Floreat Dog Beach this morning.

“He’s never won, Stevie, we’ve just named the race after him. Now he can wear it with pride,” Simpson joked.

“It’s really good; we got a sponsor this year. Grantham Street Veterinary Clinic have donated some money to RSPCA WA.

“Over half the (playing) list have got dogs, so it’s good to get down here and have a bit of fun.”

Nineteen dogs competed in the third instalment of the event.

One of the pre-race favourites, Liam Duggan’s long haired weimaraner, Blue, was an early scratching after recording two false starts.

Stevie looked to have blown his shot at glory when he took an early diversion towards the ocean, but he quickly straightened and put the afterburners on to record a comfortable victory.

Simpson said Stevie thrived in familiar conditions.

“Well, I took him down here on the weekend just to scope out the area. We live around the corner, so there was a bit of a home ground advantage,” he said.

“We’ve got a new puppy at home in training for next year. The succession plan is already in place.”

Tome Cole’s dachshund, Rocket, collected the wooden spoon.
