Champion bookends ink contract extensions

Premiership captain Shannon Hurn and dual Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy have inked one-year contract extensions

Champion West Coast Eagles veterans Shannon Hurn and Josh Kennedy will extend their careers until at least the end of the 2020 season after signing on for another season.

Key players in the 2018 premiership success, the highly respected duo are integral to the club’s structure at either end of the ground.

Both offer strong leadership, as well as their individual input – Hurn as a mainstay in the defence and Kennedy as a focal point inside the attacking 50 metre arc.

Hurn, 31, has been captain for the last four seasons and in his trademark no-nonsense manner said it was good to get the contract extension resolved before the dawn of the new season.

“It’s nice to get it locked away so I can focus on the season,” the premiership skipper said.

“With the JLT series starting on Friday, things start to build towards the start of the season and that’s our sole focus.”

Hurn will become just the eighth player to reach the 250-game milestone in club history when he plays his second game of the 2019 campaign.

Kennedy, an integral part of the leadership group who is also on the brink of his 200th game for the club, needing just one more to achieve the milestone, was also pleased to have the contract extension signed.

“It’s good to get it sorted early along with Bunga,” Kennedy said.

“I’d like to thank West Coast for another opportunity and I’m really excited about another year with this fantastic club and group of lads.”

The leading goal-kicker in club history, with 551 goals in his 199 games, is making strong progress after off-season shoulder surgery and remains on track to play in round one against Brisbane at the Gabba.
