Towering Eagles Tom Hickey and Jake Waterman are in the mix to face the Saints on Saturday night after overcoming niggles that sidelined them last weekend.

Hickey missed West Coast’s win over Gold Coast due to a minor hamstring strain, while Waterman was unavailable for selection due to a cork.

General manager of football Craig Vozzo said the versatile ruckman and emerging key forward would undertake fitness tests during tomorrow’s main training session.

“Tom had a very low grade hamstring issue post Geelong,” Vozzo said.

“Unfortunately with the six-day break we gave him every opportunity to recover in time for the game on the weekend, but unfortunately he didn’t quite get there. He’ll go through the normal hamstring protocols tomorrow and we’re pretty confident he’ll come up.

“Jake Waterman’s form when he’s played has been fantastic with the WAFL Eagles.

“He’ll full train tomorrow and is very much in contention at the selection table this week.”

In more positive news, Willie Rioli is just a fortnight away from taking the field following a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

In fact, if it wasn’t for the upcoming WAFL bye, the electric small forward might have been running around for the club’s state-league side this weekend.

“Willie is tracking really well. The poor guy has been doing a hell of a lot of running outside the boundary, but he’s in main training tomorrow in the build up to the next few weeks,” Vozzo said.

“We suspect he’ll be available this time next week for selection.”

Nic Naitanui will also join the main training group for the first time tomorrow, signalling that he is still on track to return following the club’s mid-season bye.

After taking some time to consult its medical professionals, the club has now set an eight- to 10-week return to play schedule for tall defender Tom Barrass.

Fellow backman Francis Watson (shoulder) should be available for selection in a fortnight, while Jarrod Cameron is eyeing next Thursday’s clash with East Perth as his comeback game after sustaining a wrist injury during the WAFL team’s round four win over Claremont.

Unfortunately the news is not so optimistic for Hamish Brayshaw and Patrick Bines.

Brayshaw is likely to miss at least three games after incurring a turf toe injury at the weekend, while Bines is set for a long stint in the rehab group after undergoing surgery to remedy a hernia.

“Hamish Brayshaw suffered a toe injury on the weekend. We were fearing the worst, but we got some positive news that it’s at the lower end of the range of what they call ‘turf toe’,” Vozzo revealed.

“We’re thinking it’s probably a three- to four-week process.

“Paddy Bines was brave there for the first part the year, but a hernia problem reared itself and got to the point where it needed repair, so he had surgery last week.

“We haven’t set a timeframe for Pat, but he’s a very professional guy and he’ll give it his best effort to get back in the quickest possible time.”
