It was a day of missed opportunities for West Coast, who fell short against a desperate Swan Districts team at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.

The Eagles failed to capitalise in front of goal early and struggled to recover, eventually going down 10.10 (70) to 7.14 (56).

Josh Smith led the Eagles with 28 disposals, while Brady Grey was also influential with 27 disposals.

First-year player Jarrod Cameron had his best game of the season, kicking four goals up forward.

George Hampson led the Swans’ midfield with 27 disposals, while Matt Riggio was also dominant with 26 disposals and two goals.

Patrick Italiano got the home side off the mark kicking the first goal of the game, before Tony Notte kicked the Swans’ second to jump out to an early nine-point lead.

The Eagles had their opportunities to hit back but struggled to capitalise in front of goal, kicking five behinds in the first quarter.

Leigh Kohlmann kicked a goal after the siren to extend the home side’s lead to 15-points at the first break.

Brayden Noble slotted the first goal of the second term to push the Swans’ lead out to 21-points.

After opening the game with seven consecutive behinds, Nic Reid got the Eagles on the board with an incredible goal from the left boundary, before some Cameron brilliance brought the margin back to just eight points.

However, a late goal to Gault gave the Swans a 33-19 lead at half-time.

In need of a good start, Cameron stepped up for the Eagles with a goal just 19-seconds into the third term, before Brendon Ah Chee brought the margin back to less than a goal.

Just when momentum looked to be on the Eagles’ side, back-to-back goals by Matt Riggio helped to steady the Swans, before Gault pushed the home side’s lead back out to four goals.

A late goal by Cameron helped keep the Eagles in the contest, as the Swans took an 18-point lead into the final change.

West Coast fought hard in the last quarter but failed to convert in front of goal, kicking 2.7 in the final term as the Swans held on for a tough 14-point win.

Andrew Fisher said the loss was hard to take.

However, he said spirits remained high and the team was confident it had plenty to work with moving forward.

“It was frustrating. Obviously we’re getting it down there enough so there’s still a lot of positives to come out of that,” Fisher said.

“The opportunities we’re getting in front of goal is definitely something we can work with, so we’ll look at the vision and see what we can do better.”

“We’ll look at what we can do better in the contest, continue to work on our ball movement, and finishing of our work in front of goal.”
