Season 2020 might not look like any campaign that has gone before it, but Jeremy McGovern says West Coast’s goal remains the same: To play finals footy.

Speaking on SEN’s Breakfast program this morning, the four-time all-Australian defender said the revamped fixture and temporary season suspension had not altered the Eagles ambition.

He said the club was desperate to atone for its early finals exit last year.

“We are hoping to improve on last year and do everything we can to play finals,” McGovern said.

“We’re not going to worried about too much else at this stage than just trying to play footy and then once we are playing it is just doing whatever we can to play finals and then we’ll go from there.

“It’s obviously a bit cliché, but that’s honestly how we take it.”

Like the rest of the league’s players, McGovern has been forced to take his work home during the AFL shutdown period.

And while he acknowledged it wasn’t an ideal situation, the 25-year-old said finding creative ways to maintain his aerobic fitness and muscle mass paled in comparison to the hardships others were experiencing during this time of uncertainty.

“It is a touchy time because you’ve still got to stay fit and do everything you can with limited resources and limited training times,” McGovern said.

“I’ve got a little home gym like most the boys and training wise we can train in pairs at the moment, so that makes it a bit hard to kick the footys around, but we’ll make do.”

McGovern also said the Eagles would do whatever it takes to complete the season once footy resumed.

He believed they owed it to the fans and league to get the game back on its feet my any means necessary.

“I think the boys are pretty open. Everyone I’ve spoken to, most the West Coast boys anyway, we’re all pretty open to doing whatever we can to keep the game going,” McGovern said.

“We fully understand where we are at, where the world is at and where everything is at. I don’t think we’re getting too pigeon holed or worry too much about what’s going to happen in the future.

“We will do whatever we can as players to contribute and get the game going.”
