The Town of Victoria Park in association with the West Coast Eagles, the Wirrpanda Foundation and the Perth Football Club has been awarded the prestigious community-based initiative of the year at the 2020 Parks and Leisure National Awards of Excellence.

The award recognised the partnership's commitment to its Community Benefits Strategy.

The club, working with the town, has delivered a variety of programs to promote healthy relationships; assist recreational groups and sporting clubs; and support local community organisations, while the Wirrpanda foundation has delivered a successful youth engagement program as part of the collective strategy.

West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said he was thrilled to see the Community Benefits Strategy take out the prestigious award, especially considering it was only initiated a year ago.

"To win the community award on a national basis is fantastic for the Town of Victoria Park, the Wirrpanda Foundation and the Perth footy club," Nisbett said.

"It has been great to have so many people working for the same cause and that is to make the community a better place to live in."

Town of Victoria Park Mayor Karen Vernon said the award was significant for the local community.

"When the plan was hatched a few years ago to bring the West Coast Eagles to Victoria Park, it was important for us that our whole community would benefit so the strategic outcomes of the community benefits strategy would see social, economic and civic leadership benefits for our whole community," Vernon said.

The Wirrpanda Foundation's role in engaging youth across the Town of Victoria Park has been a tremendous boost for the local community and director Troy Cook was rapt to hear that they had played a role in helping the Community Benefits Strategy claim the coveted award.

"It is great that the foundation has played a part in winning this award, we are lucky enough to be able to engage with a number of schools from the Town of Vic Park, we gather them in our classrooms and it is exciting for the kids to try something new," Cook said.

"Hopefully it is having a bit of an effect of them wanting to come to school and giving them something to do after school. We have a mix of aboriginal and non-aboriginal students, which is great that we can have a cross cultural interaction.

The West Coast Eagles have called Lathlain home since 2019 and several local businesses have also benefited from the club's move to the area.
