As the Eagles prepare for their first-ever AFLW finals campaign, coach Daisy Pearce and co-captain Bella Lewis sharpen their focus whilst reflecting on the leadership, team growth and milestone moments.

Lewis says the focus remains firmly on consistency and connection, and gave insight into her leadership style in her first season as co-captain.

“It’s been really enjoyable,” Lewis said.

“Charlie [Thomas] and I haven’t tried to change our leadership too much heading into finals. We’ve just stuck to the process each week.”

Lewis acknowledged the strength of the club’s leadership group, highlighting Pearce’s finals experience as a guiding influence.

“This week we talked about what we’re going after in our roles, and how that reflects in our leadership," Lewis said.

"For us, it’s about not changing what we’re doing, we’re here for a reason.”

Lewis also paid tribute to former captain Emma Swanson, acknowledging the significance of leading the team into finals on behalf of those who laid the foundations.

“There’s a lot of pride in it. We get to take this group into finals, but it’s girls like ‘Swanny’ who’ve captained the team for six seasons and didn’t get that chance. We get to do it for her and with her.”

Experience defender Belinda Smith will notch up her 75th AFLW game this weekend in her first finals appearance, having a profound impact on the group.

“Bel is a great connector and energiser bunny,” Lewis said.

“She’s the first to ask questions, which helps the younger girls feel comfortable. She’s incredibly durable and has been a great player in this competition for a long time.”

Pearce echoed the praise, highlighting Smith’s strategic mind and passion for the game.

“Belinda is a clever player. The way she’s evolved her game is a testament to how much she loves footy,” Pearce said.

“She challenges you with great questions and thrives in high-pressure moments. Her competitiveness will be key this weekend.”

With the Eagles earning admiration across the league, Pearce encouraged fans, especially those on the East Coast to show their support.

“We’ve been blown away by the support on the road,” Pearce said.

“We’d love to see everyone at the game on Saturday. Come down to IKON Park and cheer on some of the young stars of the competition.”
