Experienced West Coast Eagles defender Belinda Smith has called time on her AFLW career, announcing her retirement after 11 seasons in the League.
Drafted from East Fremantle ahead of the AFLW’s inaugural season in 2017, Smith made her debut for the Dockers, where she played 12 games, before spending time at the Bulldogs in 2019.
Smith returned home to join the Eagles ahead of the club’s inaugural season in 2020 and went on to play 72 games in the blue and gold, continuously raising the bar for professionalism and resilience.
“I’m so grateful for the three clubs I’ve played for and the opportunities they’ve given me throughout my career,” Smith said.
“More than anything, I wanted to be the best teammate I could be, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been surrounded by such hardworking, supportive and inspiring people along the way.”
Establishing herself as a key pillar in the Eagles’ backline, Smith has always demonstrated fantastic on-field leadership, setting the standard for her emerging teammates.
The 31-year-old has made a lasting impact at the club, both on and off the field, and was recognised for her contributions in 2023 when she was awarded the Trademark Player honour at the Club Champion awards night.
“Belinda has had a remarkable AFLW career, having been part of the competition since its inaugural season and going on to play 87 games,” Head of Women’s Football Michelle Cowan said.
“She has continually found a way to get the very best out of herself, her body and every opportunity that has come her way.
“To finish this season playing every game and having such a strong impact on our group is a credit to her resilience and professionalism.
“More importantly, Belinda is just a beautiful person and someone we have loved having as part of our club, and we wish her all the best for her exciting travels around the world.
“Hopefully this isn’t goodbye to footy, I would love to see B back in our industry one day, particularly in a coaching capacity, where I know she would have so much to offer.”
