If evidence of team success rather than individual glory is the pinnacle of a sporting career then Michael Brennan is the embodiment of that maxim.

Six times in his career Brennan figured in the top 10 in the Club Champion Award, his third position in 1990 being his highest finish. In 179 games, he retired as the club games record holder, he earned a reputation as a dour, mean defender.

Throughout his career, though, Brennan received just three votes in the Brownlow Medal yet would have been among the first selected in the team for the duration.

A measure of his standing was that he was selected in a back pocket in East Fremantle’s team of the century.
