AFLW Match Preview: Eagles v Blues

Check out who to keep an eye on, a stat that matters and what it means for the West Coast Eagles in their round 12 match against Carlton

Where and when: Sullivan Logistics Stadium, Friday, October 31, 6.15pm WST

TV: Live on 7mate and Fox Footy, and streaming live on Kayo

Last time we met: Carlton 12.5 (77) defeated West Coast 3.6 (24), round three, 2023.

In their first-ever AFLW clash, Carlton dominated West Coast with a commanding 53-point win at Mineral Resources Park. The Blues surged ahead in the second quarter with a match-defining burst of three goals in three minutes, showcasing slick ball movement and midfield dominance. Keeley Skepper starred with 23 disposals and three goals, while Breann Moody, Abbie McKay, and Mimi Hill controlled the ruck and stoppages. Carlton’s aggressive playstyle and forward efficiency saw them post their highest score since 2021. Despite strong efforts from Emma Swanson and Ella Roberts, West Coast struggled to match Carlton’s intensity and scoreboard pressure.

What it means for the Eagles: A win against Carlton in the final round would be nothing short of historic for West Coast, marking their first-ever AFLW finals appearance and a defining moment in the club’s journey. With everything on the line, it’s a do-or-die clash that could rewrite the record books and reward years of resilience and growth. The Eagles have shown glimpses of their potential throughout the season, and now they face their biggest test yet. It’s a chance to create history, inspire their fans, and prove they belong among the competition’s elite.

The stat: West Coast laid 73 tackles in their last AFLW match against Carlton, outtackling the Blues despite the loss, a testament to their relentless pressure game.

    11:40

    Oppo in focus: Dayna Finn

A rising star in the AFLW, Dayna Finn has quickly become a key figure in Carlton’s midfield. Her elite endurance and pinpoint kicking make her a constant threat. She’s coming off a dominant performance in round 11 where she notched up a game high 31 disposals, eight clearances and a goal. Finn’s ability to break lines and link play through the corridor will be central to Carlton’s game plan, and the Eagles will need to apply serious pressure to curb her influence in this high-stakes clash.

It's a big week for: Dana Hooker

This weekend marks a poignant moment for West Coast as veteran midfielder Dana Hooker announced her retirement on Wednesday. A trailblazer for the club and one of the league’s most respected figures, Hooker has been a cornerstone of the Eagles’ midfield since their inaugural season, known for her composure, leadership, and relentless work ethic. Friday’s match comes with high stakes, as the Eagles fight for a maiden finals berth. It would be a a fairytale ending for the mum-of-two, and the team will be determined to send her off in style.

Big call: Dana Hooker to kick a goal and finish with 20+ disposals, inspiring the Eagles to a historic win and their first ever AFLW finals berth.

AFLW Match Report: Heartbreak for Eagles in crucial Carlton clash

West Coast's finals chances hang in the balance with a gritty 20-point loss to Carlton

The West Coast Eagles have been left devastated, potentially now bundled out of the top eight, after their tough 3.4 (22) to 6.6 (42) loss to Carlton on Friday night at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

In wet and windy conditions, West Coast held strong for a lot of the match, but Carlton stepped up in the final term and played with more poise than their young opponents to take the highly sort-after four points.

The Eagles, who needed one win from its final two games to guarantee a maiden finals campaign, must now hope for an upset Essendon win against Sydney on Saturday night.

The importance of West Coast star Ella Roberts was clear from the opening minutes as she racked up a handful of early possessions, finishing with game-high 27 touches, and quickly established herself as one of the dominant players on the ground.

Influential youngster Charlotte Riggs was also involved early and set up the only goal of the first quarter to Lauren Wakfer as heavy rain started to fall, making conditions difficult for two teams that were keen to move the ball quickly.

Carlton got on top through the second term, with Harriet Cordner strong in defence and kickstarting the Blues ball-movement. Their ability to link up through the middle created several chances in an open forward line, with Tara Bohanna able to capitalise.

Riggs hit back for West Coast with a late goal against the flow of play, giving the Eagles a five-point lead at the main break.

That was quickly erased in the opening minute of the third when Keeley Sherar kicked a crafty goal for the Blues in traffic, setting up a pulsating quarter that saw the pressure go to another level in the slippery conditions.

West Coast built momentum by getting on top in the contest but continued to come unstuck when kicking inside 50, with scores level at the final change.

West Coast led by six points after Lucia Painter kicked a brilliant long-range goal to open the fourth quarter, but the Blues responded to kick the next four as Abbie McKay, Bohanna and Erone Fitzpatrick sealed the result.

Star Darcy Vescio put the finishing touches on the win with a long-range torpedo goal after the siren, sparking wild celebrations from the visitors.

Abbie McKay (23 disposals and six clearances) and Mimi Hill (23) excelled for the Blues, with forward Bohanna a constant threat in the second half with two goals.
