Game Day Guide: Round 11 v Collingwood

See what's on this weekend in Melbourne, as we take on Collingwood in a Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash at the MCG

    What’s On | Round 11
    Collingwood v Waalitj Marawar
    Saturday, May 23 | 4.35pm (AEST) | MCG / Wurundjeri

We're back in Victoria this Saturday, taking on Collingwood in a Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash at the MCG.

    Sir Doug Nicholls Round

Across round 10 and 11 of the 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, we will feature the Noongar language translation of the West Coast Eagles - Waalitj Marawar, meaning 'Eagles of the West'.

We will be wearing our Waalitj Marawar First Nations guernsey, designed by Andrew Beck (Ngadju Mirning Wudjari). Andrew has drawn on story, symbolism and the club’s history to create a guernsey rich in meaning.

Pre-match Sir Doug Nicholls Round ceremonies will take place on the ground from 4.28pm, featuring a live Welcome to Country, cultural ceremony and gift exchange.

    Captain’s Run & Post-match Function

Unfortunately, due to venue requirements, the Captain's Run scheduled in Melbourne will be closed.

Due to a tight travel turnaround, there will be no post-match event.

Join us for our Amphora pre-match function when we return to Melbourne for our round 16 match against Carlton and our round 18 match against the Western Bulldogs.

    Getting to the MCG

Public transport is the easiest way to get to the MCG, with Jolimont (five-minute walk) and Richmond stations plus tram routes stopping nearby, and travel currently free across Victoria until Sunday, May 31, 2026.

Driving is not recommended due to extremely limited parking, event-day road closures, and expected congestion.

Pedestrian access is via bridges from the city (including a 20‑minute walk from Flinders Street), with taxi ranks and designated rideshare drop-off points also nearby.

Match Preview: Pies v Waalitj Marawar

Check out who it’s a big week for, what happened last time and the key match-up ahead of Saturday’s Sir Doug Nicholls clash with Collingwood

Where and when: MCG, Saturday, May 23, 4.35pm (2.35pm AWST)

TV: Live on 7 and 7plus in WA, nationally on Fox Footy and Kayo (see broadcast guide here)

Last time we met: Collingwood 13.10 (88) defeated Waalitj Marawar 8.11 (59) at Marvel Stadium, Round 16, 2025.

Waalitj Marawar pushed ladder-leading Collingwood all the way when the sides last met at Marvel Stadium, taking an eight-point lead into half-time on the back of strong pressure and work rate. Led by Liam Baker, Brady Hough and co-captain Liam Duggan, the Eagles challenged the Pies throughout but were unable to halt their surge around stoppages as the experience and class of Collingwood saw the game slip away in the second half, resulting in a 29-point defeat.

What it means for the Eagles:

Saturday presents a significant opportunity for Waalitj Marawar on a big stage, with a packed MCG set to witness history as Scott Pendlebury breaks the all-time games record. Amid the occasion, the Eagles have a chance to test themselves against one of the competition’s most experienced teams, with several young players playing on the MCG for the first time. A strong performance, or a back-to-back win, would mark a significant step in the group’s development and provide a powerful statement against the odds in front of a huge crowd.

The stat:  Separated by just one win, Waalitj Marawar edges Collingwood 31–30 in 62 all-time meetings, plus one draw.

The match-up: Harley Reid v Nick Daicos

Young gun Harley Reid and one of the competition’s most polished ball-users in Nick Daicos will be vying to lead their teams to victory through their midfield impact. Reid’s power and ability to break tackles and drive the ball forward will be tested against Daicos’ composure, work rate and elite decision-making in space. Both players shape games in different ways and whichever can impose their strengths more consistently is likely to have a major say in the direction of the game.

It’s a big week for: Harley Reid

Reid will reach his 50th AFL game on Saturday, doing so on the one of the biggest occasions in the AFL this season. With a packed crowd expected, the milestone presents an opportunity for the promising midfielder to showcase his growing influence, having already lived up to the hype since being selected as the No.1 draft pick in 2023. The high-pressure environment is one Reid has shown he can rise to, and his presence around the contest will be crucial as the Eagles look to match it with Collingwood and spoil the Pendlebury party.

Big call: The Eagles crash the celebration, using the big-stage energy to fuel an upset with a statement win at the MCG.

Match report: Resilient Eagles fall short at 'G

Waalitj Marawar never gave in but couldn't overcome Collingwood in front of 90,000 fans

Waalitj Marawar threatened to spoil Scott Pendlebury's party but fell 10 points short of upsetting Collingwood in front of more than 90,000 fans at the MCG on Saturday.

On a marquee occasion, nine Eagles played their first AFL games at the Grand Final venue and the visitors showed grit and resilience to push the Pies until the end.

Back-to-back goals by star Elliot Yeo (16 disposals, three goals) and Jobe Shanahan in the final term dragged the Eagles back to within three points after Collingwood had threatened to blow the game open with a stunning burst after half-time.

Ultimately, the brilliance of Nick Daicos (34 disposals, three goals) inspired Collingwood as the Eagles fell to a 13.14 (92) to 12.10 (82) defeat.

There was plenty to like for Waalitj Marawar, including the impressive form of Bailey Williams, whose confidence continues to grow leading the ruck.

Williams finished with 20 disposals, 12 clearances, 28 hit-outs and a goal in an outstanding display, while mature-aged recruit Milan Murdock ended with 22 touches and a goal in a blanketing job on Josh Daicos.

    00:38

It was another milestone man, Harley Reid, who was out to spoil the occasion from the outset. He claimed the first stoppage of the game after brutally fending off Pendlebury with a trademark move that was reminiscent of what Dustin Martin produced at this ground hundreds of times.

Reid was everywhere early, although Pendlebury nailed him in a clean bump minutes later. But the 2023 No.1 pick thrived in just his third AFL game at the home of football, continuing his rise to stardom in his 50th.

The game stopped, literally, for a moment at the 10-minute mark of the first quarter, just after Nick Daicos missed a set shot from the pocket. Collingwood supporters held 'SP433' banners above their heads and applauded in their tens of thousands – only the Eagles cheersquad remained seated – genuflecting in front of the man who has played on this ground more than anyone in history.

The Eagles, who have won only three times at the MCG since Dom Sheed led them to the 2018 Grand Final win over the Magpies, weren't overawed by the occasion, despite only three being left from that game.

Collingwood wasted its chances early, kicking 2.6 in the first quarter, including a few missed set shots. With Milan Murdock trailing Josh Daicos everywhere, Nick Daicos had much more freedom and put his foot down in the second quarter with some clinical clearances and an important goal burning through a forward 50 stoppage.

Waalitj Marawar matched the Pies goal for goal until Ed Allan kicked the best goal of his career to date to give the Magpies the momentum into half-time.

Nick Daicos collected 21 disposals by that stage and registered a whopping nine score involvements. The game really changed when Reuben Ginbey conceded a contentious free kick for putting Nick Daicos down at the top of the goalsquare after the Collingwood star had just been penalised for a push in the back. Daicos converted, then Elliott kicked two mercurial goals from nothing that channelled Peter Daicos, to put the gap in the game.

But Waalitj Marawar didn't buckle. Instead, it kicked the final three goals of the third quarter to reduce the margin to under two kicks at the final break. Malakai Champion slotted two goals for the term to stand up during Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

    00:32

Andrew McQualter's side responded again after Roan Steele kicked the first goal of the final quarter, with Elliot Yeo slotting his third to reduce the margin to nine points. Then, Jobe Shanahan made it a three-point game after taking a pack mark and converting with just over seven minutes left.

But they wouldn't get any closer. Nick Daicos ended the game with a moment of individual brilliance at the Punt Road end, burning off Liam Baker, then cutting inside to snap the matchwinner.

Daicos finished with 34 disposals, 3.2, seven clearances and 14 score involvements in another best-on-ground performance.

Then Elliott looked set to put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal from a spot he has terrorised big powerful clubs before at this MCG, but his knee buckled on landing.

The Eagles will return home to take on Essendon in a WA Day eve marquee clash next Sunday evening - the first of three games in a row at Optus Stadium before the bye.
