Classy midfielder Luke Shuey will lead the club for a third season after the West Coast Eagles Board today ratified his nomination as captain.

He was again endorsed as the skipper in a ballot by his teammates, was supported by the match committee and subsequently ticked off by the Board.

Shuey, the 2018 Norm Smith medallist and dual Club Champion, will be supported by vice-captains Jeremy McGovern and Nic Naitanui while the next generation of leaders have also been identified.

Defenders Tom Barrass and Liam Duggan and utility player Oscar Allen round out the formal leadership group.

McGovern has been a vice-captain to Shuey, along with champion forward Josh Kennedy, for the last two seasons. Kennedy will take a step back from the formalities of a leadership role, but will continue to have a strong presence around the playing group.

Naitanui, who has won the John Worsfold Medal in the last two years, has been elevated to the vice-captaincy alongside McGovern, for the first time.

Barrass, Duggan and Allen continue to evolve and evoke high levels of respect from their peers and the club more broadly.

“The players strongly endorsed Luke in the role for a third successive season,” coach Adam Simpson said. “He is a highly respected player and person within the club and it came as no surprise that his peers again supported his appointment.

“'Gov' has also been an integral part of the leadership team for the last few years while Nic steps up for the first time officially.

“We are also fortunate to have some exceptional young players to lead the next wave through Tom, Liam and Oscar. I expect they will thrive on the opportunity within the leadership group to further develop their skills in this area.”
