What did you make of today?

“Probably wasn’t the prettiest game to watch, conditions were difficult. We came with the right intent and a couple of fundamentals in the first quarter, but we started well. We haven’t won many first quarters this year, so the second quarter was disappointing, probably the contest along the grounds in general play. They just worked a bit harder and read the ques earlier and they jumped away a little bit, but we dug in there. Some of the numbers and wins we were looking for around the tackles we had a good day 80 to 48 tackles but sometimes that means you’re second to the ball. Pressure facture was high, but we couldn’t match them in the work rate contest area for periods of the game – only in little periods but they made us pay. The last 10 minutes we tried a couple of things, and it didn’t work but overall disappointed. We looked a bit more consistent today with some of the areas we were looking at.”

You laid 80 tackles for the game, was that a focus coming in?

“It’s always a focus to put pressure on the game. For us when we have big fade outs, pressure drops right away and sometimes it’s the start of the game. The start was important to us today, we got a few personnel changes and Jai Cully came in for his first game. We had a good focus on applying pressure, but it wasn’t sustained all day. When we drop off a little, but we get hurt and unfortunately that’s where we are at.”

What did you make of Jai Cully’s debut, he looked pretty settled?

“Well, he looks like he’s up for the fight which is great, he had about 12 tackles and five or six clearances, so you’d take that from a first gamer. That’s one of many we have explored this year and will keep exploring. There will be some things there that will need to be worked on but that’s a good opportunity to play a game at the MCG and he’ll remember that forever.”

For your last five games, do you just keep trying different things or is it more betting down what you’ve been working on throughout the season?

“Yeah, we can’t chop and change. The personnel piece has hurt us throughout the year but there was a period there we got a lot of our players back and now we’ve dropped a couple again. We need to stay on the course of what we have been doing and just keep looking for the little wins. Unfortunately, we are not getting the four-quarter effort that we are striving for but I thought effort was there for the most part of today. There were some silly goals that we are conceding but there is not a chain of six or seven mistakes, it’s one or two and you get hurt and that’s what good sides do. That’s what we have confronted for the last four or five weeks, we just haven’t quite put that four quarter together.”

You must have been happy with Tom Barrass’s effort today?

“We toiled with putting him forward there for a little while, he was going so well. Obviously, he’s missed Gov a little bit and those two together work really well but yeah, he did a great job for us. He’s one of our leaders, he loves the club, and he wants us to get better so he’s doing everything he can.”

Jamaine Jones off half back, that is a nice position there for him?

“Yeah, he’s been doing that for a while, hit and miss sometimes – sometimes he’s a forward trying to learn half-back so hopefully that pays us back down the track. We are trying to get a bit of speed back there with our personnel so we are having a look at it, we will probably do it for the rest of the year to see how he shapes up for next year with it. It’s a little spot there he has found – we will just see how we go.”

Jamieson ending today with an icepack on his leg, what’s the story of that?

“Yeah, adductors or something like that. He was carrying a little bit of it and carrying it last week as well, but we thought we’d take a risk with it. He got through most of the game; might have to scan it and see how it is but I think it won’t be long term.”

Anyone back next week?

“I don’t think so, hopefully we just haven’t lost anyone. TK got a corky but that’s about it, we might be okay.”
