Ball movement was the order of the day as the West Coast Eagles got back into their pre-season work on Monday.

Refreshed following intense match simulation last Friday, the Eagles kept the competitive side of training going as umpires were called upon once again to officiate contested play.

Focusing on transition from attack to defence during one extended drill, the Eagles worked up and down a wing on the grandstand side of Mineral Resources Park.

Sidelined for so much of last year through injury, two-time John Worsfold medallist Elliot Yeo and 2021 club champion runner-up Dom Sheed were again shining lights as they found targets at will, picking through defensive zones with their elite kicking.

As he continues to progress from an interrupted 2022, young midfielder Luke Edwards also did some nice things, including showing his class in traffic with a perfectly timed handball after drawing several opponents in before releasing a teammate.

Edwards, along with impressive draftees Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett, dreadlocked bull Jai Culley, Xavier O’Neill and Campbell Chesser shape as the future of an exciting engine room that had all of its mainstays in action on Monday.

Tim Kelly's ability to shift gears out of congestion before hitting a target never ceases to amaze, while energetic skipper Luke Shuey lifted his skills workload before completing a power of running.

Chesser also took part in some drills and extra aerobic work as part of his managed build from a season ruined by an ankle setback.

The 19-year-old’s draft alumni also caught the eye, with Brady Hough showing the composure of a footballer well beyond his age and 15-game experience, while Greg Clark’s workrate was second-to-none.

Jamaine Jones was another whose deft skill with ball in hand opened up the game and Alex Witherden chiselled some expertly crafted kicks from defence.

Urged on by his new teammates, recruit Jayden Hunt found top gear in space during one passage of play in a blistering taste of what Eagles fans can expect from the attacking half-back flanker.

Reigning club champion Tom Barrass ticked off the kilometres and completed some marking exercises while sporting a protective cast on his right hand, while Liam Duggan and Jake Waterman – both managing knee injuries – were put through their paces away from the main group.

The Eagles will be back on the track this Wednesday, January 18 from 9am during an open session with fans welcome to attend at Mineral Resources Park.
