Exciting new Waalitj Marawar recruits Charlotte Riggs and Courtney Lindgren are set to make their AFLW debuts on Saturday against Euro-Yroke at RSEA Park.
Selected with pick No. 24 in the 2024 AFLW Draft, Riggs is the ultimate key position utility, with an exceptional vertical leap and impressive intercepting skills in defence.
A rare athletic talent, Riggs has demonstrated her versatility across all three lines of the ground.
Hailing from South Australia, she is already a SANFLW premiership player from her bottom-age season and brings valuable experience after three years playing senior football.
The 19-year-old, who has spent the past few months recovering from a wrist injury, said she cannot wait to pull on the blue and gold this weekend.
“I’m still kind of in shock and trying to let it settle in,” Riggs said.
“It was so exciting, we got brought in for the team meeting which was really good, and Martene (Pearman) our defence line coach asked me if I wanted to do a bit of a team prayer and blessing for the game this weekend.
“And I did it and then felt a tap on my shoulder and I turn around to see my dad who had driven nine hours straight from Adelaide, and he announced to me that I’d be playing.
“From there I just cried, a lot of tears, a lot of excitement and I cannot wait to play against St Kilda this weekend.”
Lindgren joined Waalitj Marawar ahead of the 2025 season as an injury replacement player for defender Sophie McDonald.
After a strong start to her WAFLW season as a key forward with East Perth, Lindgren earnt her opportunity and was recruited onto her first AFLW list.
The athletic 23-year-old brings a unique blend of power, agility and aerial presence, honed through her transition from a high-level netball background.
Reflecting on the news of her debut, Lindgren said it was an emotional experience.
“Honestly, it feels amazing, so many emotions flowing through me right now,” Lindgren said.
“Daisy (Pearce) kind of led into the announcement and then Jordy (AFLW List Manager Jordan Loxley) let the team know and all the girls got around me.
“I was balling, tears rolling down my face, it was a great experience.”
