A late goal to Bailey Williams helped West Coast secure a thrilling two-point win against Claremont on Saturday.

Trailing by 14 points early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles fought back against the top-of-the-table Tigers to prevail 12.5 (77) to 11.9 (75) at Claremont Oval.

The win gives the Eagles a 2-2 record, elevating the team to fifth on the WAFL ladder at the completion of round four.

Hamish Brayshaw led the Eagles with 28 disposals and one goal, while forwards Jake Waterman and Bailey Williams each kicked three goals.

Jye Bolton once again led the way for the Tigers with 36 disposals and one goal, while Tom Lee continued his impressive form booting three goals.

Brady Grey got the Eagles off the mark with a goal in the opening two minutes, before Jake Waterman made his mark with a goal seven minutes into his return from injury.

Brayshaw capitalised on some sloppy Tigers defence, and when Waterman kicked his second the Eagles had jumped out to a 23-point lead just 12 minutes into the game.

Poor discipline from the Tigers gave the Eagles two 50-metre penalties leading to a Keegan Brooksby goal and late majors to captain Fraser McInnes and Williams helped the away team secure a 30-point lead at the first break.

After dominating the opening 30 minutes of play, the Eagles struggled to replicate their first-quarter form, with the Tigers dominating possession and territory for much of the second term.

The Tigers took full advantage of their opportunities, kicking five unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into half-time.

The Eagles struggled to regain momentum at the start of the third quarter and back-to-back goals by Tom Lee and Ryan Lim helped push the home side’s lead out to 15 points.

West Coast would soon be one down on the bench, when silky defender Francis Watson was stretchered from the field after suffering a nasty shoulder injury.

A late goal by Williams helped reduce the margin to eight points at the final change.

The last quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with both sides trading goals for much of the final term.

The Eagles were in desperate need of a spark entering time-on and trailing by two points and they found it when Kurt Mutimer broke away from a pack, belted the ball into the forward 50 and found a high-flying Williams.

With the game on the line, the 19-year-old showed outstanding poise, nailing the goal to give the Eagles the lead.

West Coast's defence withstood a late onslaught of repeat entries by Claremont as they held on for a two-point victory.

Defender Harry Edwards was ecstatic after the game.

“It was an awesome win. We were really holding on there at the end, we were really under the pump especially in the backline with repeat entries," Edwards said.

“But all the boys just cracked in and it was great to get the win.”

Williams said the turnaround in the second and third quarters was a result of Claremont’s pressure at ground level.

“I think they just really brought the heat in the contest," Williams said.

'"We had all the momentum in the first, but they just kind of reversed the momentum in the second.”

“But we levelled out in the end and got over the line.”

On the back of three impressive performances, Williams was optimistic about where the team stood after its first month of WAFL football.

“We’re in a pretty good position at the moment, we’ve played some really good sides," he said.

“Perth are looking good this year and obviously Subi haven’t lost in a while and we just went down to them. To get up today, I think we’re in a really good spot.”
