Coming up against the only side to defeat them last season, the reigning premiers were pushed early before taking control of the contest and running away with the 44-point win.

Captain Ben Green led from the front with four first-quarter goals, while Paul Whitehurst proved a constant threat in attack and Tyson Knowles chipped in with an influential second half.

The Lions matched the Eagles early in an entertaining opening term, with the two sides trading goals as little separated them on the scoreboard.

Green was at the heart of West Coast’s fast start, belting the opening goal before adding another three majors as the Eagles edged ahead.

With just one point separating the sides, West Coast lifted their intensity in the second quarter and began to take control.

Whitehurst was the difference in front of goal, slotting three majors for the term, including one from a Green assist, as the Eagles held Subiaco scoreless to establish a 24-point half-time advantage.

West Coast continued to apply the pressure after the main break, with intercept marks going both ways as the contest became increasingly tight.

Knowles stepped up offensively with two third-quarter goals as Green continued his tireless work up and down the court and produced an important block to deny a Subiaco scoring opportunity.

Whitehurst opened the final quarter with back-to-back goals and added three more before the final siren, while Subiaco was held without a goal for the opening seven minutes of the term.

Subiaco continued to fight and managed three majors in the final quarter, but strong defensive efforts from Tristan Thomson and Tin Yan Tse helped ensure there would be no late comeback securing the win.

The WAWFL Eagles have a double-header coming up on October 18th, facing the Sharks at 8.30am and the Rolling Thunder at 12.15pm on the RAC Arena Outdoor Court.
