West Coast list manager Matt Clarke has provided an update on the Eagles’ activity during the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.
Speaking on Trade Radio, the club’s Head of List Management and Recruiting spoke about Jack Viney, Trent Rivers, players in the mix at pick three in the draft and updated on some of West Coast’s out-of-contract players.
Jack Viney
“We’re working through some finer details of what it might look like,” Clarke said.
“Nothing locked away as yet, but I feel like we’re pretty close.
“First and foremost (the pitch to Jack was), we think we can help get him back to his best footy.
“He obviously missed a lot of footy from an AFL point-of-view in the season just gone, but prior to that he was a very durable guy and played a lot of great footy through the middle of the ground for them (Melbourne).
“We think that Jack can get back to his best footy and help us on-field but also accelerate the development of our young guys playing through there.
“He’s a great warrior, a great leader, we continue to build our leadership in that space, and we think Jack will, hopefully, be part of that.”
Trent Rivers
“We haven't had strong dialogue as yet with Melbourne and Trent still hasn't indicated he actually wants to make that move, so we need to make sure that's the right thing for us as a footy club and for Trent and for Melbourne, to be fair," Clarke said. "We see these deals (for Viney and Rivers) as pretty separate.
"It’s obviously got to suit them (Melbourne) - Trent’s a contracted player. If it doesn’t suit them and doesn’t suit us on a number of different fronts then it won’t happen.
“We think his age profile probably suits us and what we need but there’s a little bit to play out with that one.”
Players in the mix at pick three
“We feel it’s a really good pick – there’s some versatile players around that pick that suit us from all parts of the country and all parts of the ground, to be fair, so the (recruiters) are pretty excited about what it looks like there,” Clarke said.
“There’s probably around five or six (players in the mix). There might be minimal difference between them so it’s just about what we look for in a position type and what position type we may go down.”
Clay Hall and Jack Williams remaining uncontracted beyond this year
“It’s just part of the industry. It’s not a great part of the industry for those guys, we understand that, and the impact it has on them and their families - the uncertainty,” Clarke said.
“It’ll be a wait through the Trade Period for those guys and we’ll assess what list spots we’ve got post the Trade Period with players going in or out.
“We’ll be as upfront as we can with those guys but a lot of clubs in the same position.”
