West Coast Eagles WAWFL duo Ben Green and Paul Whitehurst have helped WA to a fourth-placed finish at the Toyota AFL Open.
After finishing fourth on the ladder with a 4-2 win-loss record, the WA wheelchair representative side faced top team South Australia in the opening round of finals for the right to play off in the Grand Final.
The Croweaters were too strong, backing up a 50-12 victory over WA on Tuesday morning with a 34-3 triumph in the first final in the afternoon.
WA was drawn to face Tasmania in the third-place showdown on Wednesday and couldn’t match their firepower in a 13.9 (87) to 5.7 (37) defeat.
Green – the Eagles’ captain – coached WA during the three-day tournament in Melbourne.
The AFL Open is the AFL’s flagship national event for footballers with disability, bringing together the best inclusion and wheelchair AFL players from across Australia.
More than 18,000 people participate in disability inclusion football programs across NAB AFL Auskick, NAB AFL Superkick, AFL Nines and community football competitions, with the Toyota AFL Open representing the pinnacle of these pathways.
