The West Coast Eagles and WA Football Commission’s Naitanui Academy ‘In-School’ program is developing a new generation of footballers across the state.

Targeting children from diverse backgrounds, the program encourages participants to try their hand at Australia’s favourite game and sign-up at a local junior football club.

The six-week program has engaged more than 2000 children between the ages of 12-15 years in 2017.

West Coast Eagles manager of game development Adam Selwood said the program was an integral part of attracting new participants and fans to the game.

“The relationship we have developed with the WAFC has been really strong where we have been able to build a great platform for future growth as our programs mature,” Selwood said.

The Academy operates within four metro zones: East Perth, Perth, Swan Districts and Subiaco.

The WAFC district officers from each zone play an instrumental part in the coordination, development and delivery of the program.

WAFC community development manager Isaac Stewart said it was critical to create a welcoming environment for children having their first crack at playing football.

“By partnering with the West Coast Eagles and their Naitanui Academy, we have been able to develop a clear pathway for these kids that is mutually beneficial for all,” Stewart said.

This year’s program ran during terms two and three at Aranmore Catholic College, St Norberts College, Lynwood Senior High School, Kiara College and Balga Senior High School.

At present, the West Coast Eagles and WAFC are encouraging participants to attend ‘After-School’ programs within their zones in the lead up to the Naitanui Academy Cup

Children from each zone will contest the round-robin event on Friday, November 17.
