Hurn backed up his career-best, premiership-captaining 2018 season with another outstanding campaign in 2019. One of the best users of the ball by foot in the game, Hurn’s on-field actions were backed up by his undeniable leadership qualities, honoured by his peers at the game’s best captain. His level-headed approach and elite performances down back earned him his second all-Australian blazer and he will be sure to feature prominently in the 2019 John Worsfold Medal count.

Standout performance: Downing the Dees

Hurn was a monster in defence in round nine as the Eagles withstood a barrage from the visiting Melbourne in the first three quarters before wrestling the game away from the Dees in the final term. Hurn was one of the key factors, if not the key factor, in keeping the Eagles within striking distance in the early parts of the game. Impenetrable in defence, he dominated by cutting off several Demons attacks while also launching the Eagles forward with his elite ball use. The skipper had 33 disposals, took 13 marks, had seven rebound 50s and laid two tackles to be one of the best afield.
