Adam Simpson is like many West Coast fans getting “itchy feet” for football to return and can't wait for the chance to get back on the rollercoaster ride of another AFL season.

While the Australian community is making encouraging progress getting on top of the COVID-19 crisis, there is still a way to go before the competition's shutdown ends.

But five Eagles who returned to their families after round one are set to re-enter Western Australia soon and Simpson is keenly anticipating the chance to resume his seventh campaign at West Coast's helm.

“A bit like everyone else, (I’m) getting itchy feet but it’s still a little bit of a journey to go before we get to playing football, but it looks like we’re getting a bit closer,” Simpson told Channel Seven.

“I think we had a good week last week (containing the virus) and hopefully everyone stays safe and we keep slowing that spread and by the end of next couple of weeks we get a bit more direction to when we start playing.”

West Coast players are still only able to train in groups of two but Simpson hoped the AFL guidelines would be relaxed soon.

“Hopefully the AFL can lift the stance from two to 10 (players training together) at some stage in the next week or two and we can elevate training and a bit of transition running for our players and get right for a pre-season that will last probably three weeks,” he said.

With restrictions on group gatherings in WA recently lifted to 10 people Eagles players can catch up socially and Simpson is looking forward to reconnecting face-to-face with his squad rather than digital platforms.

Eventually a mini pre-season period will begin back at Mineral Resources Park along with a return to some normality.

“What do I miss the most? Interaction with the players,” Simpson said.

“I’ve been chipping away doing some stuff as a coach does, but it’s not the same, we need results. We need highs and lows.

“The stress level is not as high but you miss that as well. I think all of us involved in AFL have missed that element of competitiveness – all those things that come with the job.”
