AIS-AFL Academy squad members Clem Smith and Sam Bevan this morning trained with the West Coast Eagles in the club’s first session at Patersons Stadium in 2014.

As part of the 12-month scholarship, all 30 members of the academy will spend a week at an AFL club within their home state, which includes all three main training sessions.

WA recruiting scout Brad Smith believes it is a tremendous initiative that greatly assists in the development of these young players.

“It’s a great opportunity as the boys get a first-hand look at how an AFL club ticks,” Smith comments.

“They are able to see just how hard you have to work in order to play football at the top level.

“Dom Sheed was in the academy last season and spent a week with us in the same process.

“I think it really helped him, and it was also a heap easier with Dom being a massive West Coast supporter.

“Clay (Smith) and Sam (Bevan) are too which is pretty handy”

After an impressive performance for Western Australia’s under 18s team, Smith is a highly touted defender/midfielder who will be a great talent available in next year’s draft.

The Perth product was named best on ground in the clash against Tasmania, amassing plenty of football in his side’s big win.

Bevan, who played for Claremont colts last season as a medium-tall leading forward, had a terrific state 16s carnival and will look to build on his frame over the off-season.

Both boys will be interviewed at the conclusion of the week by Eagle Eye Tv for a recap of their experience.
