As initiated last year, the West Coast Eagles yesterday held the first session of the club's Indigenous Leadership Program.
Sponsored by community partner BHP Billiton Iron Ore, the program involves three indigenous players from each WAFL club who are given the chance to form a clearer understanding of what it means to be an indigenous footballer through information sessions on subjects such as nutrition, leadership, fitness and goal-setting, as well as a training session on Subiaco Oval conducted by West Coast football staff.
The 27 nominated talented youngsters were welcomed to the program by assistant coach Scott Burns and were presented with their own jumper by David Wirrpanda and Matt Rosa to commemorate their achievement.
During the afternoon the boys heard firsthand of the challenges faced by AFL footballers from Sandover medallist and West Coast indigenous liaison officer Phil Narkle, learnt of the opportunities available through the AFLSportsready Program, picked up important nutrition tips from club dietician Terreen Stenvers and the values of leadership from leadership and professional development manager Peter Worsfold, as well as going on an exclusive tour of the club’s inner sanctum.
The unanimous highlight of the afternoon for all the boys was the opportunity to listen to premiership player and role model David Wirrpanda who provided valuable football and life advice to the group of budding footballers.
West Coast indigenous liaison officer Phil Narkle believes the program is an important opportunity for young footballers.
"This program is targeted to indigenous players who are just finding their way into the colts division of the WAFL and who will absorb and benefit the most from this leadership program," Narkle said.
"BHP Billiton Iron Ore has given these boys the opportunity to come here and gain experience that they would otherwise never be exposed to.
"A program like this one not only gives the boys vital football skills, but more importantly it arms them with knowledge about leadership and citizenship which will then be passed on to their family and friends."
