The West Coast Eagles will kick off their 2021 premiership campaign at Optus Stadium against one of the competition’s hot young teams, the Gold Coast Suns, after the AFL today released details of the opening round.

The Eagles will play the Suns in the last match of the round at home, with the twilight fixture starting at 3.10pm on Sunday, March 21.

The season will launch with what has become a traditional season opener between Richmond and Carlton at the MCG on Thursday, March 18 at 7.35pm EDST.

The Eagles are well aware of the capabilities of the Suns, who upset them at Metricon Stadium in round two this year, after the visitors  had relocated to a hub at the Royal Pines Resort, just a couple of kilometres from Metricon Stadium.

The AFL is expected to release details of the first five or six rounds in coming days.
