A trio of gun left-footers were standouts as the Eagles were put through their paces during their first match simulation work for 2021 on Friday.

Navigating blustery conditions, it was no surprise that the class of neat ball users Dom Sheed, Liam Duggan and Andrew Gaff shone through at Mineral Resources Park.

Duggan was prolific, controlling general play with quick decisions and sharp skills, just days after exiting quarantine alongside Gaff, Jarrod Brander and Jackson Nelson.

Gaff and Sheed spent time on the wings and, a week after he claimed 2km time trial honours, the latter’s workrate was immense – something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by his teammates.

“He has always been a quality (trainer) but he’s gone to a whole new level and he’s really excelling above a lot of the rest this off-season,” champion forward Josh Kennedy said of Sheed on 6PR on Thursday night.

“He’s definitely put in some real good work over that (Christmas) break and he’s come back firing.

“It’s exciting to see when you’ve got a kid of that calibre come through and that age gap now where he’s really coming into being one of the better players in our team.

"It’s good to see him rise to that this pre-season.”

Kennedy was the early beneficiary of a crisp pass from young defender Ben Johnson, who hit the star big man on the lead 40m from goal before he duly converted the set shot.

Speedy forward Jack Petruccelle was lively throughout and flicked on the afterburners shortly after to snap truly from the pocket, while draftees Luke Edwards and Zane Trew were in the thick of it at times and showed some poise.

Key defender Tom Barrass was rock-solid marshalling the backline in the short bursts of action, interspersed with several game-specific drills, with Nathan Vardy providing a strong presence in the ruck.

Skipper Luke Shuey, Brendon Ah Chee and Elliot Yeo were in a small group held out of main training as they continue building their running loads.

The remainder of West Coast’s players in quarantine are set to rejoin the squad next week as the opening pre-season clash against St Kilda on February 19 at Leederville Oval comes closer into focus.
