Much has been made of the form of the West Coast Eagles’ emerging players in the WAFL this season, but some senior players are also in good touch and pushing for selection.

Ruckman Mark Seaby, forward Ashley Hansen and midfielders Chad Fletcher and Tyson Stenglein ensured their names would be cast forward in selection discussions this week with eye-catching performances at the weekend.

Seaby produced a best on ground display for West Perth while Hansen kicked three goals for Swan Districts and both Stenglein and Fletcher picked up plenty of football for Subiaco.

While those senior players will be pushing for a place in this week’s team to play Sydney, the youngsters also continued to impress.

It is unlikely that Nic Naitanui will be rushed into the team, but he showed in 80 minutes with Swan Districts all the attributes which make him one of the most exciting players to be drafted to the club in many years.

As well, Swans teammates Ryan Davis and Tony Notte were unmder notice while Brad Ebert produced a terrific effort for Peel Thunder and Tim Houlihan has sustained outstanding form for East Fremantle over the past four or five weeks.

Following is a summary of the form of the West Coast players at WAFL level over the weekend:

Claremont v Perth

Pat McGinnity: McGinnity played in midfield and worked extremely hard until he got severe cramp half way through the third quarter.  He had collected 18 possessions to that stage, had used the ball well, and defensively did a good job. Came back onto ground in the final term and continued to work hard.

Tom Swift: Played on the wing and was an efficient player for the Tigers. His use of the ball, especially first half, was outstanding. Spent much of the game on Ashley Smith where they had an interesting battle.

Beau Wilkes: Continued his terrific form at centre half-back, where he was dominant. Started with nine possessions in the opening quarter and took six marks.  He also spent some time at centre half-forward and was then shifted to full-back opposed to Thornton, who had kicked three goals, He returned to half-back in the final term.

Lewis Stevenson: After shining for the first three quarters on the wing, where his ball skills and ability to carry the ball were a feature, he received a knock to the head and did not complete the game. Stevenson is working his way into some consistent form and is an emerging talent.

Liam Bedford: After starting the game on the interchange, Bedford played at half-back and in the back-pocket.  He was involved in a number of good passages and was creative with his ball use.

Will Sullivan: Will rucked for the majority of his ground time.  He had 30 hit outs and when he was aggressive in the boundary throw-ins he was good at maintaining front spot and competing in the air.  He was effective around the ground as well and continues to impress with his work rate.

Ashley Smith: Smith was opposed to Swift for most of the game, backed himself in on a number of occasions and looked dangerous for his team. Generally his ball use was good in an encouraging display. He is improving with each week.

Peel v West Perth

Ashley Arrowsmith: Arrowsmith started the game as a midfielder tagging Troy Longmuir.  When Longmuir went forward Arrowsmith followed and did a good job before playing half-forward himself in the second half.

Brad Ebert: Ebert worked very hard all day, ran extremely well and his skills were excellent.  He played mainly through the midfield and half-forward and was one of Peel’s best players.

Mark Seaby: Continues to work towards his best form. He rucked extremely well but also was prominent around the ground, pushing hard to get possessions offensively and defensively.

Jordan Jones: Was involved in some good passages of play where he showed some intensity and desperation.  Spoilt well and is another young player benefitting from the experience of playing senior football.

Subiaco v East Fremantle

Chad Fletcher: Played on-ball, wing and half-forward and produced a strong four-quarter effort. He worked hard through the midfield and also laid some solid tackles. Was one of Subiaco’s most consistent contributors.

Tyson Stenglein: In his first game for a decade at Subiaco, he took some time to adjust to the tempo and the further the game went the better he played. Played through the midfield and across half-back and would have gained some confidence from the effort.

Tim Houlihan: In outstanding form in the last month, Houlihan continued to impress with a concerted running effort and good use of the ball.

Swan Districts v East Perth

Ashley Hansen: Kicked three goals in a good performance for Swans and always looked dangerous. Presented well up the ground and could have had a better return on the scoreboard.

Ryan Davis: Davis was under notice through the midfield in the early part of the game and was then shifted to half back for the second half. Applied good physical pressure and contains to shine for his club,

Tony Notte: Started in attack and then was used as a roaming ruck.  He gathered most of his possessions up the ground. As usual he was creative when he had the possession and produced a quality effort..

Nic Naitanui: Was used to good effect and eased back into senior football, although he had 25 hit outs. Did some good work all around the ground in an encouraging display.
