Tom Cole made a successful return to the field in 2023, following a season-long absence in 2022 as he rehabilitated a serious ankle injury. However, in a cruel twist of fate, Cole sustained another ankle injury in round four against Melbourne, resulting in an additional 12 games on the sidelines. The 2018 premiership defender’s ability to shut down dangerous small forwards while offering dash and rebound from half-back was difficult to replace, and he was a welcome inclusion back into the squad for the final eight games of the year. Entering his ninth season on the West Coast Eagles’ list and contracted with the club until at least the end of 2025, the Bendigo product has emerged as an important leader amongst the playing group who will help drive the next era.
