Match Report: Blues overpower Eagles at Optus

The West Coast Eagles were eclipsed by a slick and consistent Carlton outfit at Optus Stadium

The West Coast Eagles were eclipsed by a slick and consistent Carlton outfit at Optus Stadium tonight, falling by 63 points after a disappointing start and an equally flattening final term fadeout.

The Eagles failed to score in both the opening and final terms as they lost in a lack-lustre effort 17.14 (116) to 8.5 (53).

    00:38

After the Blues jumped out of the blocks, with spearhead Charlie Curnow leading the charge to establish a 34-point quarter-time buffer when the Eagles were held scoreless, the home side then produced a stunning second quarter revival.

With Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Jake Waterman finally getting some supply (after just two forward 50 entries in the opening quarter) they got on a seven goal roll.

Through the midfield Tim Kelly and Luke Shuey started to get their hands on the ball, Nic Naitanui wielded a strong influence around stoppages and they manifested a remarkable momentum reversal.

Down back Liam Duggan was inspiring with a couple of brilliant goal-saving tackles to go with his strong rebounding effort and together with Shannon Hurn and Jamaine Jones, the Blues looked bedazzled.

Trailing by just 10 points at half-time there was a sense that Eagles could complete an almost unthinkable fightback.

The third term was more of an arm wrestle, with the Eagles controlling the ball for long periods without getting a reward on the scoreboard.

The Blues kicked a late goal against the flow to again established a 17-point advantage at the last change and it seemed it would go down to the wire.

But from there it was one-way traffic, just as it was in the opening term when the Eagles simply could not get their hands on the ball.

The overall picture was best illustrated by the lop-sided inside 50 count that read 70-34.

    Carlton                      5.4     8.7     10.10    17.14    116
