AFLW Match Preview: Eagles v Crows

Check out who to keep an eye on, a stat that matters and what it means for the Eagles in the round 10 clash with Adelaide

Where and when: Mineral Resources Park, Saturday, November 4, 2:05pm

TV: Live on 7mate, 7plus, Fox Footy, Kayo and the AFL and AFLW Live Official apps.

Last time we met: West Coast 1.3 (9) def. by Adelaide 6.6 (42) at Punt Road Oval (Swinburne Centre), round three, 2022.

A young and developing West Coast side came up against an experienced Adelaide outfit on a scorching day out at Punt Road. The Eagles showed fight across all four quarters, staying strong in the last when both sides were obviously fatigued, and despite the loss, West Coast displayed promising signs of improvement and maturity against one of the competition’s best sides. Dana Hooker was one of the Eagles’ best, finishing with 18 disposals and four clearances, while Aisling McCarthy (18, four) also played an important role.

What it means for the Eagles: Saturday draws a close to the Eagles’ 2023 campaign, which has ultimately been a challenging season. The Eagles have recorded two wins, over Port Adelaide and Essendon, with multiple winnable games slipping through their fingers. Second-placed Adelaide will be a tough task for the young Eagles side, but they will want to turn up with a fighting spirit and fire in their bellies to finish out the season positively in front of their home fans, family and friends. Despite the outcome of the game on Saturday, if West Coast can stay competitive for a full four quarters, and take learnings from their opponents, it will be a beneficial experience to carry forward into next season.

    02:08

The stat: Emma Swanson is set to become the first Eagles AFLW player to reach 1000 career disposals, requiring just 18 touches on Saturday to reach the milestone. Currently in her eighth AFLW season, Swanson is sitting on 982 disposals from 54 games (including 13 games at Greater Western Sydney), and she is currently averaging 21.4 per game.

Oppo in focus: Adelaide midfielder Anne Hatchard will be one to watch this week, coming into this game on the back of a 32-disposal (game-high), six-mark, three-tackle and five-clearance (team-high) outing in her team’s three-point win over the Kangaroos last round. Fellow midfielder Ebony Marinoff has also impressed all season, with another dominant display against the Roos, finishing with 29 disposals, seven marks, nine tackles (team-high) and three clearances.

It’s a big week for: Rohan McHugh

Eagles’ caretaker coach Rohan McHugh will lead the team for the final game of 2023, after stepping into the head coaching role ahead of the Western Bulldogs game in round nine. The players have embraced the new voice and fresh perspective of McHugh, but unfortunately couldn’t get the win in his first game in charge last weekend. McHugh has been loving his experience at the helm so far, and regardless of the result against the Crows on Saturday, will want his team to remain competitive, produce a consistent four-quarter effort and put on a good show to wrap up the season.

Big call: Kellie Gibson, who has kicked a career-high 10 goals this season, and one third of West Coast’s goals in total for the season, will add another three goals to her 2023 total on Saturday in her 50th AFLW game.

Spirited Eagles fall to the Crows

The Eagles fought hard in their season finale but were unable to match a classy Crows outfit

The West Coast Eagles displayed incredible work rate and drive across four quarters against Adelaide but fell by 26 points in scorching conditions at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday.

The Eagles provided a test for the season six premiers with a 'nothing to lose' attitude, but it was not enough against the experience and class of the Crows, who made a game-breaking move in the second quarter with five straight goals.

West Coast fought hard to bring the margin back to 14 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Crows again lifted when needed and kicked away with the last two goals to make sure there were no untimely hiccups.

They did so without several key players, having rested captain Chelsea Randall and three-time club champion Anne Hatchard among six strategic omissions in the final-round clash, which proved wise in 37-degree heat.

Midfielder Ebony Marinoff was the star with 23 disposals and seven clearances, enjoying an entertaining battle with young Eagles star Ella Roberts, who also impressed with 27 and six inside 50s during a full game in the midfield.

Danielle Ponter's time in the midfield was crucial for the Crows through the second quarter, while the team benefited from having nine separate goalkickers in an even team performance built on hard running and smart ball use after a scratchy start.

The Eagles matched the Crows through an entertaining first quarter, using their pressure to force turnovers and getting on top outside the contest through hard offensive running and much improved ball use.

They took a one-point lead early in the second quarter when milestone Eagle Kellie Gibson snapped a brilliant running goal, but that was the last time they would have the edge over the premiership contending Crows.

Through their dominance in the midfield, the Crows went on a five-goal run that split the game open, with Ponter delivering a highlight when she won a centre clearance, burst forward with two bounces and then converted on the run after a quick give-and-go.

When crafty small forward Rachelle Martin fed Teah Charlton for the visitors' fifth goal from seven forward entries in the quarter, they took a game-high 29-point lead.

The Eagles' ability to fight back into the game was impressive and showed they have taken plenty out of their final fortnight under Rohan McHugh, with captain Emma Swanson (28 and four clearances) as well as Belinda Smith, Bella Lewis and Gibson (two goals) impressive.
