AFLW Match Preview: Eagles v Lions

Check out who to keep an eye on, a stat that matters and what it means for the Eagles in their week four battle with Brisbane

Where and when: Mineral Resources Park, Sunday, September 22, 3:05pm

TV: Live on 7Mate and Fox Footy, and streaming live on Kayo

Last time we met: West Coast 4.0 (24) def. by Brisbane 15.8 (98) at Mineral Resources Park, round eight, 2022.

It was a tough day out for the blue and gold, the youthful West Coast Eagles side were overpowered by a more experienced Brisbane Lions at Mineral Resources Park. The West Coast backline saw a lot of the play, with defenders Belinda Smith (15 disposals, six intercepts) and Evie Gooch (10 disposals, four intercepts) amongst the Eagles best, while Emma Swanson (22 disposals, six marks) and Mikayla Bowen (19 disposals, six tackles) worked hard through the midfield.

What it means for the Eagles: The Eagles have a tough ask coming up against the reigning premiers, especially being down a couple of important soldiers in Jess Hosking (quad), Jaide Britton (concussion) and Amy Franklin (finger). West Coast have produced their most successful start to a season since entering the competition, securing back-to-back road wins, and now have an opportunity to record their fourth win, at home in front of the Eagles’ faithful. This developing squad has shown a lot of promise and hard work, and they will be going into this clash with a belief that anything is possible.

    01:01

The stat: The Eagles and Brisbane have both started the season with a 3-1 record, West Coast leading the two sides in kicks (145-134) marks (41-39) and rebound 50s (23-21).

    Oppo in focus: Ally Anderson

Premiership-winning midfielder Ally Anderson has been a ball magnet in 2024, currently averaging and elite 30 touches, four marks, six tackles and eight clearances a game. The All-Australian set a competition record for disposals in a match (43) in week two against Melbourne.

It’s a big week for: Belinda Smith

Veteran defender Belinda Smith becomes the first Eagles’ AFLW player to play 50 games in the blue and gold. Smith has played every game for the club since West Coast joined the league in 2020, having previously played for the Dockers and the Bulldogs, and has become an important pillar of the Eagles backline. The experienced 29-year-old plays a crucial role in the guidance of new recruits coming through the program, both on and off the field, and was recognised for her efforts with the 2023 Trademark Player Award.

Big call: Teen star Ella Roberts will kick three goals in her 25th Eagles game.

Milestones: Belinda Smith 50 Eagles games, Ella Roberts 25 AFLW games
