AFLW Match Preview: Eagles v Giants

Check out who to keep an eye on, a stat that matters and what it means for the Eagles in round seven against GWS

Where and when: Mineral Resources Park, Sunday, September 28, 3.05pm

Last time we met: West Coast 10.4 (64) def. Greater Western Sydney 6.4 (40), round five, 2024.

The Eagles recorded a club-high score in a commanding win over the Giants at Henson Park, led by a breakout performance from Ella Roberts who booted three goals and collected 20 disposals. West Coast surged ahead with a six-goal run across the second and third quarters, while GWS struggled to respond despite a strong defensive showing from Izzy Huntington and a career-best three goals from Tarni Evans. The win lifted the Eagles into the top eight, while the Giants’ finals hopes took a hit.

What is means for the Eagles: After a tough 51-point loss to Melbourne last weekend, a win on home turf would be a crucial confidence boost for West Coast. It’s an opportunity to reset, rediscover their winning form, and show resilience in front of their home fans. With the season still wide open, bouncing back strongly would reaffirm the team’s belief and momentum. A victory would not only steady the ship but also send a message that the Eagles are capable of responding with intent and grit when challenged.

    08:26

The stat: Despite a heavy loss to Melbourne last round, West Coast still ranks in the AFLW’s top eight for inside 50s per game (averaging 41.2), showing they’re generating opportunities.

    Oppo in focus: Zarlie Goldsworthy

Zara is one of the AFLW’s brightest young stars and a game-changer for the GWS Giants. A dynamic midfielder-forward hybrid, Goldsworthy combines explosive speed, sharp goal sense and elite ball use to consistently impact contests. Already a Rising Star winner and club best and fairest, she’s known for her ability to break lines, hit the scoreboard and lift her side with moments of brilliance. Whether bursting from stoppages or creating chaos inside 50, Goldsworthy’s versatility and flair make her a constant threat and a key player to watch.

    01:45

It’s a big week for: Kellie Gibson and Roxy Roux

Gibson will celebrate her 50th game in the blue and gold in front of a home crowd at Mineral Resources Park. As one of the club’s most experienced campaigners, she has been a consistent presence throughout West Coast’s journey in the competition.

Roux reaches the AFLW 50-game mark, having built a reputation as a dynamic and fearless competitor. Her energy and physicality have made her a fan favourite and a key figure in the Eagles’ forward line. A win on Sunday would be a fitting tribute for the dual milestones highlighting two players who have made significant contributions to the club.

Big call: Kellie Gibson celebrates her 50th game with a standout performance, kicking 3+ goals.

AFLW Match Report: Gutsy Eagles overcome illness to end Giants' run

An under strength West Coast has prevailed against Greater Western Sydney by 42 points on Sunday evening

An underdone West Coast outfit has returned to the top eight after bringing a plucky Greater Western Sydney side back down to earth with a 42-point win.

The Eagles led at every change en route to an 11.9 (75) to 5.3 (33) victory at Mineral Resources Park on Sunday to make amends for last round's 51-point thrashing from Melbourne.

Daisy Pearce's side, after an illness swept through the camp during the week, rise to eighth (4-3) on percentage and end a two-game losing streak.

Ali Drennan and Roxanne Roux were late changes to the West Coast team on Sunday through illness, but the Eagles refused to be put off.

Young star Ella Roberts was influential again for West Coast while managing a right elbow complaint, finishing with one goal, 23 disposals, six clearances and 18 contested possessions.

Roberts had hurt her elbow in a contest with GWS young gun Zarlie Goldsworthy in the third quarter.

West Coast also denied the Giants, sitting 15th (2-5), in their bid to claim three straight wins for the first time in their AFLW history.

GWS had snared two wins on the trot for the first time since 2021 after a shock seven-point win over local rivals Sydney last round.

Giants skipper Bec Beeson was busy with a game-high 27 disposals, four clearances and nine tackles.

Eagles forward Amy Franklin, after a goalless start to the season, got off to a flying start, kicking two majors in the first quarter.

Franklin finished with three, with teammate Kellie Gibson slotting two goals.

Just as the Giants looked set to head into quarter-time scoreless, Irish ruck Eilish O'Dowd took two bounces to run home.

But O'Dowd undid her own work when she gave away a 50-metre penalty for encroaching on the mark, allowing Eagles forward Gibson to restore a 19-point lead after the quarter-time siren.

Both sides could only manage one goal apiece in the second quarter, with GWS swing-woman Izzy Huntington slotting her first major since round 10, 2023.

Huntington hit the scoreboard again after the main break, but West Coast responded with three straight goals to snuff out the challenge.

So dominant were the Eagles that they kicked six of the last seven goals. They will look to continue the winning momentum into their round eight clash against Collingwood at Mineral Resources Park on Sunday.
