    Match Preview: Giants v Eagles

Check out who it’s a big week for, what happened last time and the key match-up ahead of Sunday’s clash with the GWS

Where and when: ENGIE Stadium, Sunday, August 16, 1.40pm (11.40am AWST)

TV: Live on 7 and 7plus in WA, nationally on Fox Footy and Kayo (see broadcast guide here)

Last time we met: West Coast 13.10 (88) defeated GWS 10.11 (71) at Optus Stadium, round 10, 2026.

The Eagles claimed one of their best wins of the 2026 season when they stormed home to defeat GWS by 17 points at Optus Stadium. Trailing by four points at three quarter time, West Coast kicked the final four goals of the game to run away with the win. Harley Reid starred with 33 disposals, 10 clearances and two goals, while Jake Waterman kicked three majors and Bailey Williams was influential in the ruck as the Eagles' relentless pressure proved the difference.

What it means for the Eagles: With just two games remaining, the Eagles have an opportunity to finish the season on a positive note and build momentum heading into the off season. After showing encouraging signs against Collingwood last week, Sunday's clash with GWS presents another chance to turn strong performances into results and continue the group's development with a fast finish to the year.

The stat: West Coast and GWS have met 19 times, with the Giants holding a narrow 11-8 advantage in the head-to-head record.

The match-up: Milan Murdock v Lachie Whitfield

Milan Murdock's work rate and pressure around the contest could prove crucial against one of the competition's most influential players in Lachie Whitfield. Since earning his chance at AFL level, Murdock has brought energy, toughness and a willingness to cover the ground, traits that will be vital against the damaging Giant. Whitfield is coming off another standout performance and has been in outstanding form, using his elite running power and ball use to drive GWS from defence and through the midfield.

It’s a big week for: The Club

Sunday shapes as a unique day for the West Coast Eagles, with both the AFL and AFLW teams taking centre stage in Sydney as part of a club-wide double header. The AFL side will face GWS at 11.40am (AWST), before the AFLW team launches its 2026 campaign against the Giants at 2.45pm (AWST). With the men's team looking to finish the season strongly and the AFLW side beginning a new chapter after last year's maiden finals appearance, it's an opportunity for the Eagles to showcase the strength and growth of the club across both programs on the same day.

Big call: It'll be a Sydney sweep for the blue and gold, with both the AFL and AFLW sides returning West with four points after a memorable double-header day against the Giants.

Match report: Eagles taught Giant lesson

West Coast started strong but couldn't threaten GWS after quarter-time on Sunday

West Coast was overpowered by a more determined Greater Western Sydney as the Giants finished off their home campaign with a convincing 54-point win.

Needing a win to maintain their slim hopes of a wild card spot, the Giants kicked nine straight goals as they charged to a 16.15 (111) to 7.15 (57) victory at Engie Stadium on Sunday.

To snare a spot in the finals, the Giants need Carlton to lose on Sunday afternoon against the Western Bulldogs and in the final round, while the Giants also need to beat Adelaide next week.

They turned a 16-point first-quarter deficit into 35 and 47-point leads at half and three-quarter time.

West Coast slumped to a 10th straight loss despite winning the clearances and racking up the same number of inside 50s.

Their lack of accuracy across the two middle quarters proved costly with the Giants kicking 8.5 to the Eagles' 0.9.

With questions over the futures of Toby Greene, Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer, Greater Western Sydney showed it had other goal-kicking options up forward, although Greene contributed two majors.

Callum Brown booted four goals, Aaron Cadman three and Harvey Thomas and Riley Hamilton two each.

Both teams kicked five goals in a frantic first quarter in which West Coast had seven more inside 50s.

The Eagles dashed to a 16-point lead on the back of four straight goals, with Tom Cole involved in all of them, as the visitors scored primarily from back-half chains.

Greater Western Sydney retaliated by kicking four of the last five goals of the term to lead by one point at quarter-time, with four majors coming from clearances.

The Giants carried the momentum into the second quarter, kicking. 6.2 to 0.5, with their running game and drive from the back half cutting the Eagles apart.

Eagles spearhead Jake Waterman had another mixed outing, kicking 2.3 and Liam Baker also kicked two goals.

Tim Kelly (28 disposals) and Harley Reid (25) best to keep the Eagles in the contest, both winning eight clearances, while Jack Graham laid eight tackles while gathering 26 touches.

Bailey Williams won the ruck duel with 39 hit-outs and seven clearances of his own but West Coast couldn't capitalise.

Giants defenders Lachie Ash and Lachie Whitfield tallied 36 and 33 touches, respectively.

The Eagles finish off their 2026 campaign in the final game of the home and away season against Hawthorn next Sunday evening.
