West Coast's AFLW Operations and Wellbeing manager Michelle Cowan joined 64 mothers in lacing up the boots for a ‘Mums v Mums’ football match on the weekend.

A crowd of over 500 cheered the women on, with West Coast eventually taking out the title against Palmyra Junior Football Club, despite a late run from the Demons.

Cowan was overwhelmed at the turnout, with over 60 mums signing up for the competition in just two days.

“Well done to Palmyra Junior Football Club, a fantastic initiative that saw 64 mums pull on the boots and live out their childhood dreams," she said.

“The West Coast Eagles' mums took out the victory, but the Palmyra mums came back in a late surge.

“Overall it was a hugely successful evening which drew a crowd of over 500 people.

“Starting in the ruck was a big first for me… I had to channel Parris Laurie and Nic Naitanui.

“Funds raised from the night went to the McGrath Foundation, with West Coast mascot Rick the Rock also in attendance.

“A special thanks also to Krista Tames, captain of the winning team, who put such an incredible effort into organising the inaugural event.”

President of the Palmyra Junior Football Club, Anthony McMullen, was also pleased with the emphasis this has placed on furthering female football engagement.

“The club has put a big focus on growing female footy this year growing from a single girls’ team in 2019 to six teams in 2021,” he said.

“And what better way to build our community and show our girls the way than having our Mums show them how it’s done?”
