West Coast captain Emma Swanson isn’t worried where her team sits coming into round four of the competition stating that this is a small step in a long journey that Eagles' are embarking on.

While losses can be frustrating the skipper has been working to lift her younger teammates prior to the side travelling to Sydney this weekend to play the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

“You go through the highs and lows of footy, to come back from behind against Port then under-perform for the next two games is a little frustrating.” Swanson said.

“I guess we are staying realistic, looking at the experience within our group we have a lot of young players who are finding their way at the top level.”

Preparation was a key phrase used by the Eagles’ captain, ensuring that the younger members are still learning the ropes of AFLW though they are learning fast.

“We just need to find our way and find our best preparation, talking on experience we’ve got a lot of players who have only played three or four games of AFLW,” she said.

“They are still trying to find what their individual prep looks like and how they best perform and it’s on us more experienced players to guide them as much as we can and let them feel their way through that and once they’ve played 25 to 30 games we’ll be fine.”

West Coast have lost two games on the trot, the first on the road against Gold Coast and the latter against Essendon where West Coast went into the sheds at quarter time trailing by 30 points.

Swanson credited her coaches and staff for assisting in keeping spirits in the camp high, noting that her side has a clear plan in place for the games ahead.

“We’re pretty lucky we’ve got so many coaches and staff around that the young players can get to work with one on one,” she said.

“For example, I can see Hamish (Brayshaw) individually and I can tell him what I need for that week and we can go through some clips and that’s the same for the younger player.

Trust the process, trust coaching staff, trust the S&C staff and just do what we need to do today to make us a better team tomorrow.

“It helps giving us a little bit of confidence going into the next week if it’s the opposite the coaches can help us see what we need to improve on.

“The resources we have here allows us to do that and really push forward our focus each week.”

Talking to her teammates Swanson assures her group is closer together than ever all working towards one common goal how ever long it may take.

“Hand on heart I believe we are taking huge steps in the right direction, I’ve got a lot of perspective and I’m really realistic to where this group is at.”

“Maybe it’s because I know them personally, I’m not panicking about where we are going and I have full trust in the program we’ve put together as well as the coaching staff and the list we have.”

With Greater Western Sydney ahead of their round four clash the side is under no illusion they will bring more challenges coming off an impressive win against the Sydney Swans.

However the skipper ensures her side will give the Giants problems if they can string together four quarters of strong footy.

“Every game in AFLW is winnable and we will go over this weekend and want to win.”

“We've probably had the best start to the year we've ever had since entering the competition, so the team is still confident.”
