Young gun Reuben Ginbey is looking forward to Jeremy McGovern’s return against Essendon, saying West Coast’s defenders ‘walk taller’ with the champion backman by their sides.

McGovern has missed the past two matches with an adductor strain and will add important leadership and experience to the last line.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Ginbey emphasised how the five-time All-Australian has helped his transition to a permanent defender this year.

“He’s super important for us. We know how tough he is, so everyone walks taller when Gov is playing, definitely,” Ginbey said.

“Going down back – especially with the experience of Gov down there – has been really helpful for me.

“The back end of last year I got moved down there … and I really enjoyed it. I’ve really enjoyed the start of the year and hopefully I can keep improving down there for the rest of the year.”

Ginbey has been one of the Eagles’ shining lights in the opening five rounds, using his athleticism and size to intercept mark and rebound from half-back.

“I think with my inbetween height it’s good for my versatility,” the 191cm defender said.

“I can take on the smalls but – probably not the biggest talls – but if I can chop and change on them for a bit it’s a really good challenge. To use my athleticism has come in really handy at times.”

Emerging star Harley Reid has also spent time down back in recent weeks, adding drive from defence with his elite ball use and go-forward mentality.

“That’s been great. Harley has really shown his versatility,” Ginbey said.

“We know what he can do up forward, he can take hangers, he’s strong in the midfield and he’s working on the defensive side of his game as well.

“The more we can get the ball in his hands the better.”

West Coast will be searching for its first win in the Good Friday clash against the Bombers, with a big crowd expected for the marquee fixture.

“It’s cool to have a Friday night game. We don’t get too many and to be back at home at Optus in front of our home fans,” Ginbey said.

Elijah Hewett is a chance to return for the clash after missing the past two games with a minor calf strain.

Hewett and Ginbey are important planks of the Eagles’ build of their playing list, after being drafted in the first round together in 2022.

“Me and ‘Hewy’ are great mates and he’s my locker buddy as well, number eight,” Ginbey said.

“It’s been a tough couple of years with his body and his feet, but I can’t wait to see him back at his best.

“He looks super fit and healthy. An up and going Elijah Hewett is a pretty scary players, so I can’t wait to see what he’s got.”
