Senior coach Andrew McQualter says Waalitj Marawar will weigh their options to combat Kuwarna’s star tall forward line, while praising Harry Edwards’ strong return in recent matches.
The Eagles travel to Adelaide Oval this Sunday and will have to stop Darcy Fogarty (25 goals this season), Riley Thilthorpe (23) and Taylor Walker (18).
Edwards and Sandy Brock stood tall last round in the breakthrough victory over Euro-Yroke, and McQualter has to consider his best mix for another tough challenge.
Reuben Ginbey has the capability of playing above his height, while Rhett Bazzo has produced some strong WAFL Eagles form if required.
Co-captain Oscar Allen is another option to send back after he flipped forward and kicked two important goals last round.
“We talk about it regularly, we’re going to play Oscar – and I’ll keep saying – wherever the team needs him,” McQualter said.
“Understand the Crows do have a tall forward line they rely on a lot so we’ve got to get our contest right in that space and we’ll pick a team we think most capable to do that.”
Edwards returned from two weeks out of the senior side and stood tall against Richmond spearhead Tom Lynch at the MCG and the Saints’ smaller forward line.
“I think Harry’s played two really strong games,” McQualter said.
“We were really clear with what we wanted out of Harry when he went back to the WAFL and it’s a credit to him for going away, working on his game and understanding what his role in our team is.
“He’s competing really hard.”
Mid-forward Izak Rankine is another dangerman for the Crows and defender-turned-mid Brady Hough could find himself opposed to the classy Kuwarna star once again, after their previous battles.
“We’ll look into it for sure. He’s (Rankine) playing a fair bit more midfield than the last couple of years, looking at the numbers and watching their games," McQualter said.
"They’ve changed their midfield mix since last year, so it is different.
"(Rankine's) an electric player, really hard to stop, so we’re going to have to have some plans for him but they’re also got a few others – (Jordan) Dawson and (Josh) Rachelle that go through there who are pretty damaging, (Jake) Soligo as well."
Waalitj Marawar will be forced into at least two changes with half-forwards Jamie Cripps (knee) and Matt Owies (calf) sidelined for around a month.
Meanwhile, McQualter said the Eagles would continue supporting Jeremy McGovern as he awaits a date to consult the AFL’s Concussion Panel.
The five-time All-Australian defender was involved in light kicking and jogged laps on Thursday, and the vice-captain will continue to have a presence around the group.
“’Gov’s’ doing OK. The unknown is a bit of a challenge but he’s doing OK. We’re going to continue to support him,” McQualter said.
“He’ll have a couple of days off work as we go to Adelaide this weekend and then it’s just so uncertain at the moment what happens next. We can’t speculate too much on what will happen next.
“We know it’s going to the panel and when that’s decided and when that will happen we’re not sure yet.
“We’ll just wait and see and keep supporting Gov through the process.”
