Emerging tall defender Sandy Brock has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract extension until the end of 2027, continuing his remarkable rise since arriving at the West Coast Eagles.
Invited to train with the Eagles over summer, Brock impressed and was signed to a one-year contract during the Supplemental Selection Period in February.
The 22-year-old made his AFL debut in round four and has showcased his athleticism, team-first mindset and rapid development across nine matches so far.
“Signing a two-year deal is extremely exciting,” Brock said.
“I can’t wait to have another two years to play with the guys here.”
Brock’s journey has been nothing short of a whirlwind.
The Peel Thunder product spent three seasons on Gold Coast's list without playing a senior match before being handed a second chance at West Coast.
“The transition over the last six months has been huge for me,” Brock said.
“I was delisted at Gold Coast and given the opportunity to come to West Coast as a train-on and was lucky enough to get a spot.
"I played a few WAFL games and then into the AFL - it’s been a rollercoaster.”
Brock's extensions follows the recent re-signings of exciting talent including Tyrell Dewar, Lucca Grego, Tom Gross, Hamish Davis and Jack Hutchinson.
West Coast Eagles Head of List Management and Recruiting, Matt Clarke, praised the defender’s mindset and output since arriving.
“Sandy has grabbed the opportunity through the SSP with both hands, and we are excited to have him sign an extension,” Clarke said.
“His work ethic, team-first approach and rate of improvement over the pre-season was a standout.
"His athletic ability and versatility behind the ball for us has been extremely valuable and we look forward to his continued improvement.”
Brock credited the influence of senior players and coaches in helping him adapt quickly to the demands of AFL footy.
“I’ve been really lucky to have some great people around me to help me work on my craft,” Brock said.
“Learning from people within the club and the AFL has given me the tools to up my game and learn new skills.”
The athletic defender has built a reputation for his explosive acceleration and agility, regularly launching counter attacks from the backline.
“I’ve always thought I was pretty quick,” Brock laughed.
“Some people think I’m the quickest, but I don’t quite have the start that the smaller blokes have. ‘Petch’ (Jack Petruccelle) might have me there, but once I get going, I really get going.”
Since returning to the west, Brock has embraced the club’s passionate fan base.
“The fans just love the team. Even in a tough season, they’re always showing up to the games,” Brock said.
“Even at the away games you can hear the West Coast Eagles fans. That’s just amazing.”
Brock also highlighted the bond growing among the Eagles’ emerging defensive unit.
“I’ve found the group amazing, I can’t wait to have another two years with them,” Brock said.
“Especially the key backs Reuben Ginbey and Harry Edwards, we get along well and are notching up games together.
"We’re growing and developing as a group and getting more experience as a team."
