West Coast Eagles youngsters Lucca Grego and Kayley Kavanagh will both make their debuts in the blue and gold this weekend - Grego at Optus Stadium against Sydney and Kavanagh at Windy Hill against Essendon.
Pick 48 in the 2024 AFL Draft, 18-year-old Grego has earned his opportunity after an impressive year of development in the WAFL, showcasing the traits that made him a standout junior prospect.
A competitive and resilient defender and midfielder, Grego is renowned for his strength in one-on-one contests and in the air as well as his ability to read the play.
Originally from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria, Grego was a prolific performer for the Western Jets in the Coates Talent League, where he captained the side and averaged 23 disposals to finish third in the club’s best and fairest.
He also played a key role for Vic Metro in defence at national level, underlining his versatility and leadership qualities.
Grego will become the final member of his draft class to debut for the Eagles this year, and the 10th overall for 2025, in the season-finale against the Swans.
“It’s pretty exciting, and the boys all got around me as well, which was really cool,” Grego said.
“I found out this afternoon in front of the playing group, ‘Duggo’ (Liam Duggan) got up and announced I’m going to play my first game this week.
“Since arriving at West Coast, my focus has been on playing my role, contributing to the team, and playing with a lot of intent and flair.
“What I’m most looking forward to is running out there with the boys, I’ve spent all year sitting in the boxes watching them do it, so I can’t wait to experience it myself.”
Kavanagh was selected by West Coast in the 2023 AFLW draft with pick no. 14, the exciting inside midfielder hailing from the Calder Cannons and Victoria Metro.
She had an outstanding 2023, earning All-Australian selection and winning Victoria Metro’s most valuable player award.
The 20-year-old unfortunately suffered an ACL injury last pre-season, sidelining her for the entire 2024 campaign.
Kavanagh is a reliable contributor with her production, defensive pressure and clean hands, and she will be the third debutant in the opening two rounds for the developing Eagles AFLW side.
“It feels amazing,” Kavanagh said.
“I’ve worked so long and so hard, especially after missing last season with an ACL, so it’s such a good feeling to finally be getting out there with the girls.
“I’m really looking forward to debuting in my home state and running out at Windy Hill, which is just five minutes from my house in Melbourne.
“Hopefully all my friends and family can be there to cheer us on.”
