The West Coast Eagles' resilience and growing belief were on full display in Sunday’s round four win over Port Adelaide, with senior coach Daisy Pearce praising her side’s ability to adjust under pressure and keep turning up for one another.

For the second week in a row, the Eagles fought back from an early deficit, this time overturning a 19-point margin to run out 19-point winners in wet conditions at Mineral Resources Park.

Pearce said she was most proud of her team’s commitment to four-quarter pressure and their composure when the game was on the line.

“Our group’s resilience just keeps growing and it was really pleasing to see us tested again and find a way,” Pearce said.

“When Port threw challenges at us, the girls were able to identify what wasn’t working and adjust on the fly. At no stage did we feel panicked.”

The Eagles’ backline once again stood tall under heavy inside 50 pressure, with Pearce singling out the efforts of young defender Jess Rentsch, who took on the role of quelling dangerous Port forward Gemma Houghton.

“To have that versatility, with Jess shifting from inside mid to defence and playing such a disciplined role, was a real highlight,” Pearce said.

“Our backs as a whole are working well together, and Charlie Thomas has been leading the way brilliantly as our new skipper.”

The developing chemistry across the ground has been another key factor in the Eagle’s back-to-back victories, with Pearce pointing to the group’s growing connection and problem-solving on field.

“They’ve always been a competitive and connected group, but now they’re translating that into footy conversations and solutions in the heat of battle,” Pearce said.

There was also praise for the midfield unit, with young gun Ella Roberts continuing to impress after demanding a spot on-ball with her contested craft and decision-making.

“Ella’s ability to be clean at ground level and then put pressure on her opponent is becoming elite,” Pearce said.

With a strong squad and healthy competition for spots, Pearce said the challenge now is to continue improving week by week, with the blockbuster RAC Derby on the horizon.

“We were in a similar position at this stage last year and fell away in the back end, so the focus is on using the season to get better,” Pearce said.

“Fremantle will be a big challenge, we haven’t beaten them before but we’re looking forward to the opportunity.”
