West Coast Eagles young gun Jobe Shanahan is committed to doing extra work on his craft, which was evident following his impressive performance on Sunday against the Kangaroos.
Shanahan played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ 17-point win at Optus Stadium, finishing with 14 touches, eight marks and two goals, and was recognised by the League with the round two Telstra AFL Rising Star nod.
“We’re pretty big on the extras, I'm always out there after training,” Shanahan said.
“I’ve got a session dedication to skills and stuff like that, so we get a lot of aerial fundamentals in.
“We’ve got Harry Taylor and Jacob Brennan out there too, who have done a lot of it in their time so it’s good to learn off them, and we all just compete really hard.”
The 19-year-old Moama product shared how he found out that he was the Rising Star for this round.
“I was at a school visit in a classroom and Gavin Bell (Eagles' General Manager - Football) gave me a call and I couldn’t pick it up at the time,” Shanahan said.
“But I rang him back, and I was a bit worried, you just never know what could happen the day after a game.
“But it was really positive and I was very happy. It means a lot.”
Shanahan heaps high praise on experienced teammate Jake Waterman, and his influence and guidance in the forward role.
“He’s been great, I didn’t get to play with him last year obviously, but since I’ve come in he’s been really good to me,” Shanahan said.
“We had to go to Northam a couple of months ago for an appearance and I went on a little road trip with him.
“It’s good to just learn off him and listen to him and watch his craft.”
The closeness of this young Eagles group has been evident on and off the field, and Shanahan said it helps to build the culture within the club.
“We want to be a really tight-knit group, ‘Mini’ (Andrew McQualter) calls us brothers,” Shanahan said.
“We really pride ourselves on being a close group and that’s what our culture is built on.”
