Perseverance has paid off for Harvey Johnston with the versatile West Coast youngster called up to face Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

The 20-year-old has been rewarded for his strong WAFL form with his first appearance since round 24, 2024 in Geelong – a 625-day wait between matches – and he returns alongside Jack Hutchinson and Harry Edwards.

The Eagles have omitted Elijah Hewett and Harry Schoenberg, while Matt Owies has a calf strain.

Bo Allan, Clay Hall and Jack Williams are the emergencies for the Mother’s Day clash.

Johnston played six AFL games in 2024 but couldn’t break through last year, despite making 17 WAFL appearances.

He has averaged 14 disposals, four tackles and a goal per game in five state league matches this year.

Meanwhile, Hutchinson will play his first AFL game for the year after diligently working back from ankle surgery in December.

The 24-year-old adds running power and positional flexibility to Andrew McQualter’s team, coming off three WAFL performances.

“We rate ‘Hutchy’s’ ability to play multiple positions, he’s tough, he’s athletic and he’s an important player to our team so it’s great to have him back,” McQualter said.

Edwards returns at full-back to stiffen the Eagles defence following two concussions in close succession earlier in the season.

Sunday’s 1.10pm (11.10am AWST) game will be broadcast live on 7 and 7-plus in WA, and nationally on Fox Footy and Kayo.
