Defender Harry Edwards will follow concussion protocols after being ruled out during the game against Melbourne, while draftee Sam Allen is facing a setback after suffering a high-grade hamstring injury.

Edwards was removed from the game after a head knock but has recovered well in the days following.

“Harry copped another knock to his head during the game on the weekend and was ruled out with concussion,” High Performance Manager Phil Merriman said.

“He’s actually recovered well and is in good spirits, but we’ll now follow the appropriate process to ensure we’re looking after his long-term health, which is our main priority.”

Allen’s momentum in his comeback from an ACL reconstruction has been haltered by a hamstring injury sustained in training last week.

“In sad news, Sam suffered a high-grade hamstring injury which will require surgery,” Merriman said.

“It’s devastating for Sam, and we’ll assess his progress before determining timeframes.”

There was more encouraging news for veteran Jamie Cripps, who went down with a knee injury during the WAFL match against South Fremantle on Saturday.

“Most would have seen the vision of Jamie going down with a knee injury on the weekend which, admittedly, didn’t look good,” Merriman said.

“Pleasingly, he has avoided the worst-case scenario although he has certainly given his knee a big stretch in hyper extension, which has left his knee pretty sore and swollen.

“We’ll allow his knee to settle before confirming a return timeframe.”

Archer Reid and Brandon Starcevich are both closing in on their returns, with the pair continuing to make strong progress in their respective rehabilitation programs.

“Archer’s knee has turned the corner and he’ll train this week with a view to returning to full training next week,” Merriman said.

“’Starce’ will pretty much be in full training over the next couple of weeks. We’ll see how he progresses through this week to determine when and where his return will be.”

Tyler Brockman has also taken steps forward in his recovery, beginning his running program as he builds towards availability.

“Tyler has started his running and will gradually reintegrate into the main group while we build his fitness,” Merriman said.

Midfielder Jack Graham continues to build following shoulder surgery and has made solid progress since returning to running.

“Jack had a really good week last week, with improved range through his shoulder,” Merriman said.

“We’ll continue to build his strength alongside his running program.”

Forward Matt Owies will be assessed later in the week after experiencing calf tightness.

“Matt felt some awareness and scans showed a soleus muscle injury,” Merriman said.

“We will assess his progress with the two training sessions this week to determine his availability.”
