Elite West Coast Eagles defender Reuben Ginbey collected a perfect 10 AFL Coaches Association Votes for his dominant display in the team’s 30-point victory over Essendon on Sunday.
Ginbey’s match-up with Essendon forward Nate Caddy was one to watch throughout the game, with Ginbey holding Caddy goalless until the final term.
“It was a pretty good battle,” Ginbey told Channel 7 post-match.
“Obviously he’s a star key-forward coming up, but I love getting that challenge every week.
“I probably had the better first half but then he kicked a couple late, so a pretty even match-up in the end.”
The Eagles have claimed two victories in their last three games, and Ginbey said there’s still plenty of work to do as the team continues to build.
“This season has had its ebbs and flows, we started pretty well with a couple of wins and then had a bit of a down patch,” Ginbey said.
“I think our last three weeks of footy has shown the competition what we can do, but we’re not happy just yet with where we’re at, we’re going to keep building.
“We’ve got two more games at home and then the bye, so really just working towards these next few weeks.”
The AFL Coaches Association voting system sees each senior coach award votes on a 5‑4‑3‑2‑1 basis, with 10 the highest possible score a player can receive from a match.
At season’s end, the player with the most accumulated votes is crowned the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year.
