West Coast's four-game winning streak has come to an end, falling short in a hard-fought four-point loss to Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday.
The Eagles created opportunities throughout the afternoon but were unable to capitalise consistently, with the Power holding on for a narrow victory.
Coach Daisy Pearce said the game highlighted the importance of maintaining consistent pressure around the contest and defensive urgency across all four quarters.
"I thought early on we were just ever so slightly off with our hunt on the ball and our urgency to defend," Pearce said.
"I thought in the first quarter we just let them have a bit too much of the footy.
The Eagles generated a number of promising forward entries and scoring opportunities but were unable to make them count often enough, with Pearce crediting Port Adelaide's defensive efforts.
"I think taking chances when we create good looks, but a lot of credit goes to the opposition today,” Pearce said.
"Times where it felt like we were on, they just came out on top."
After building momentum through the second and third quarters, the Eagles stayed in the fight before Port Adelaide gained the ascendancy late.
"Our third quarter was really strong," Pearce said.
"Our desperation and ability to absorb was good in that quarter, but in the last they put the foot down and got a lot of forward momentum out of their midfield, which put our defence under pressure."
Young star Ella Roberts again battled through close attention from the opposition, producing another influential performance (22 disposals) despite spending much of the afternoon under a heavy tag.
Pearce praised the 21-year-old's competitiveness and willingness to impact the game in different ways.
"She just fights her way through," Pearce said.
"What I love about Ella is when she's not winning the ball herself, she's looking to chase and tackle.
Pearce backed her group to respond strongly and continue the steady improvement that has been a hallmark of its season.
"The beauty of this team is our goal is to just improve every week and turn up for the next contest," Pearce said.
