When the siren blew to signal the end of a frantic fourth quarter at Leederville Oval, Kellie Gibson knew what a special moment it was for the Eagles to claim their historic first AFLW victory.

The 24-year-old has been part of some big wins before.

A 2017 premiership player with Adelaide, Gibson was also best afield for Swan Districts’ 2013 WAFLW Grand Final and earned herself a gold medal representing Australia in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic rugby sevens.

Speaking after the game, the fourth-year player tried to explain how special Saturday’s victory was in the context of her already decorated career.

“It’s pretty mind-blowing; I keep telling the girls it feels like we won a grand final,” Gibson said.

“It’s a history-making game and for us as a footy club. It’s insane, we’re pretty pumped.”

Gibson said West Coast head of female football and 187-game-Eagle Adam Selwood spoke to the team after the game and encouraged them to ‘smell the roses’.

While the multi-sports star said she would make sure to relish the moment, she said the group would have to turn its attention to next Sunday’s clash with Melbourne relatively quickly.

“I think we’re really going to appreciate this, so we can take it into Monday, jell more as a group and hopefully get one on the road,” Gibson said.

“We did it as a team and every quarter was just as hard as the last. I’m really proud of the girls.

“We had nothing to lose, everything to gain, and it paid off.”
