What did you make of that?

It was a really disappointing night. They were really good and we were really bad. It’s a great leveler this game. Everything we scouted they did and we couldn’t match them on the inside and they beat us on the outside as well.

How much has that got to do with what happened on the field and how much has it got to do with the hub?

You just cannot use that as a reason. I think we’ve got to give a lot of credit to Gold Coast. They are going to be a very strong, competitive team. They’re young and we’re more mature, but they played like a mature side and we played like a young side.

There was a time when you came out and hit the front and played well. Do you think maybe your players thought the same thing given their experience?

I’m not sure how our players felt, but I don’t think we handled the pressure well and I don’t think we handled the conditions well. That’s something we’ve got to adapt to, because we’re here for a while. They played a strong brand of football and they defended really well. We had moments, but not enough. There were some sloppy free kicks, easy goals from stoppages. We’ve got a lot of work to do.

Where did it break down Adam, because it seemed like you couldn’t get any clean entries into your forward line and when you did they seemed to get numbers back quickly. I know you have to look at the game, but where do you think the spot was where it broke down?

I think it broke down through the contest the whole night. Everything we did was rushed. We didn’t win our one-on-ones and it was one of those nights where you needed to win the contest to get some field position and we didn’t. It was a poor performance.

When you say the conditions, do you mean the weather?

Yeah. It was a bit slippery, the humidity is different than where we are from. We’ve played here before, so … I suppose we’re not used to it, but we trained at night the other night and we handled it pretty well. Tonight we didn’t. They looked a lot cleaner with the conditions. We got beaten in all areas in terms of the contest. That’s where we needed to start.

Do you reassess or change anything or think about changing things with how you train? Is there anything you will do as a result of this experience in these conditions?

I need to talk to the players. We’ll sit down tonight or tomorrow. There’s plenty of time together this week. We’ve just got to be careful, after a loss sometimes it’s good to get away with your families and detach a little bit, so we need to give them some space. But we are going to review it and we need to get better. Whether it’s our system or whether it’s our ability to hunt that needs to improve, we’ll look at that.

Now that a loss has happened, does it make it harder in this hub environment to work out how you need to talk to people?

No, we don’t deviate too much during the week, so we need to stick to a routine, which we are still establishing. We’ll stick to what our plans were. We’ve got a lot of disappointed people and the club, but that happens. That’s the feeling we haven’t had for the past 10 weeks, the ups and downs, and unfortunately we were on the receiving end tonight. We’re not going to base everything on tonight, but we’re going to address a few things.

You spoke about the run and being outrun in the end. Is it the case now that you need to look at the guys that may have missed out to try and bring that back?

It’s a bit early. I need to look at everything. I don’t know what the running profile (was). It looked like we struggled to get over the ground, but when you get beaten badly around the ball you look slow and you look like you’re struggling. Our priority will be to win the footy.

Luke (Shuey) battled away pretty well tonight but in the end he took on a couple of big hits.

He tried his heart out. Look, there were some pretty good efforts there, but that’s what we expect.

Early on it seemed like like they were going pretty hard, particularly at Luke, maybe targeting him a little bit. Do you think that?

No. I just thought they went hard full stop, which we scouted. Their Marsh Series is a good reflection of what we saw tonight. Their round one game against Port, I’m sure they would have been disappointed because it was unlike them. We didn’t deliver tonight.
