Claremont midfielder Mikayla Western had a breakout season in 2022 playing eight games with West Coast before going down with an arm injury in round eight against Geelong ruling her out for the remainder of the season. In her first season with West Coast, Western play was outstanding especially on the defensive end. Her ability to use her speed to bring defensive pressure through the midfield was first class as she trademarked the chase-down tackle as one of her key strengths. Prior to her time at the Eagles, Western has only made one appearance in AFLW, debuting for Fremantle in round nine of the first 2022 season against the Melbourne Demons as a last-minute call up, before ultimately being snatched up in the draft by West Coast for 2022’s second season.
